I THINK KANYE WEST IS GOING TO MEAN SOMETHING SIMILAR TO WHAT STEVE JOBS MEANS. I AM UNDOUBTEDLY, YOU KNOW, STEVE OF INTERNET, DOWNTOWN, FASHION, CULTURE. PERIOD.  Mr. West talks to the NYT's Jon Caramanica about everything, apparently his first full-length interview in years, and whether you care for his music or not, it's a hell of a read.

  1. Fact-checking Kanye--he has, in fact, won Grammys over white artists:

2005 Best Rap Album--"College Dropout" beats Beastie Boys' "To The Five Boroughs"

2006 Best Rap Album--"Late Registration" beats Eminem's "Encore"

Yeah, there's this one Corbu lamp that's also my greatest inspiration.

  3. Wow, and in both cases unwarranted wins to me.

But with 21 Grammys, he indeed has more than anyone his age -- more than Beyonce, more than Jay-Z, heck, more than Springsteen or Aretha (though the number of awards available in Rap is clearly a factor.)

  5. To some extent, but it's also volume of output--a bunch of his nods are for guest verses on other people's tracks. And to his credit, he's done it all in the rap field, while other young artists play in multiple fields--Taylor Swift has had nominations in both country and pop fields.

  6. "[My instinct to orate my second opinions at awards shows has] only led me to complete awesomeness at all times. It’s only led me to awesome truth and awesomeness. Beauty, truth, awesomeness. That’s all it is."

When I was on my run, it occurs to me that Tywin Lannister addressed this: "Any man who must say 'I am the king' is not a true king at all."
