TAKING THE WIG OFF THE SHELF: So, we now have a front-runner for next year's Tony for Best Actor in a Musical.  Neil Patrick Harris has announced that immediately upon wrapping HIMYM, he'll assay the title role in the first Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.  Even though the show hasn't appeared on Broadway in the past, it'll almost certainly be deemed a revival under the "classics" rule, so won't be eligible for book/score.  (Most interesting--the theoretically showdown between NPH and Hugh Jackman.)

To say that I'm excited is an understatement. The music is so interesting, and the role super demanding, and can you honestly think of anyone else who would be a) good at it, and b) willing?

I've never seen the show, but I've heard some of the music. Do I just go ahead and book my trip to NY now?

  4. NPH v. Jackman? They'll have to settle this the old-fashioned way: By singing the Les Miz "Confrontation" duet! [Alternatively, claws vs. freeze-ray.]

Jackman? HOUDINI was stalled last I heard, when they lost Sorkin.

So, uh, this isn't a Harry Potter thing?

  8. Houdini is technically still on the calendar for next season, though you never know.

So you're saying Houdini could ... disappear?

I am anxious and psyched. I love the show and have seen many less-than-Broadway-scale productions of it. And I love NPH, of course. But whether he can pull off Hedwig? I'll be rooting for him. Can't wait to see who else is cast.

Not a schedule you can expect to keep in a ... straight jacket!

Or both. When they jointly host the Tonys.

Houdini falling apart would be a real punch in the gut.
