UP ALL NIGHT TO HAVE FUN: Stephen Colbert threw a "Get Lucky" dance party last night, and the video is well worth your time (featuring special cameo by a surprisingly bearded celebrity via Skype!).
This reminds me that one thing that I haven't seen much coverage of is how the CBS/TWC kerfuffle is impacting late night ratings. With NY/LA blacked out of CBS on cable, I'm wondering if Letterman is taking a disproportionate hit, since his fan base is heavily urban.
Let the record reflect that this the first time in demographic analysis history that someone used the term "urban" in a manner which was not synonymous with "African-American" but actually just meant "urban". Mazel tov, Matt.
Stone-faced guys in the front row are Hyundai executives. http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/428371/august-06-2013/stephest-colbchella--013---special-guest-stephen-colbert-
I suspect Daft Punk was originally going to appear and this stuff would have been interspersed with it. Because of the nature of Daft Punk's act (DJs in Robot costumes), I suspect they're not the most visually stimulating of performers.
Your suspicion would be wrong. E.g., http://m.music.cbc.ca/blogs/2013/5/How-Daft-Punks-2006-Coachella-show-revolutionized-live-electronic-music The possibility of their first live performance in years is kind of A Big Deal.
The Times says they were going to appear in costume, but not perform or be interviewed. I was watching live last night trying to decide if it was an elaborate gag or if this really was a last-minute clusterfuck; sounds from the Times piece like it was the latter.
Colbert wins the night!!!!

ReplyDeleteSo what really happened here? Because obviously this took weeks to put together. Was Daft Punk never actually going to appear?
