PULL OUT THE WABAC:OK, let's journey 5 years into the past--which of these statements would have seemed most implausible then?
  • Jimmy Fallon will (a) take over The Tonight Show and (b) critics and the hip young audience will eagerly anticipate him doing so.
  • Andy Samberg will be starring in and winning awards for a critically admired sitcom on Fox.
  • Matthew McConaughey is an Oscar frontrunner.

I would have bet against the star of the Ghosts of Girlfriends Past being an Oscar contender.

Fallon. I know it makes me the old man on his lawn in his underwear screaming at those damn kids, but, they should have renamed The Tonight Show when Carson retired. Nobody, and I mean nobody should have ever been the host of The Tonight Show, especially not Jay Leno. I watched The Tonight Show from the time I was 9 or 10 years old until Johnny retired, learned more about interviewing from Carson than any other human being. Attribute my success in taking depositions and trial cross examination almost entirely to studying him. Letterman is a close call, but Conan and Fallon no way. And, I say that despite loving to watch Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon and David Letterman all. I've never been able to watch more than a couple minutes of Leno without switching the channel. Stay off my lawn.

Samberg, easily, since I don't care about the Tonight Show. I'm not surprised, really about McConaughey; he just had a rough patch of bad movies. But wow, Samberg suddenly finding/being found for this role that fits him surprised the heck out of me.

Oscar frontrunner Jared Leto feels excluded -- he was way further away from respectability than McConaughey ever was.

1.) Fallon: 5 years ago, we'd be wondering what happened to Conan.

2.) Samberg: Not surprising he'd have a sitcom, just that it would be good and he'd be good in it.

3.) McCoughnahey: he could always act, just chose not to.

  6. Leto always did arty stuff that had at least theoretical critical appeal, though--Fight Club, Requiem for a Dream, He never had the "garbage paycheck" stuff McConaughey's resume is full of.
