TAKE THAT, BILLY BEANE: For Opening Day, Mental Floss has a
map of the most popular baseball team in each county of the US, based on Facebook likes, finally determining, once and for all, the disputed border between Yankeestan and Red Sox Nation. (3 teams have no county where they have the plurality of fans--the A's, Blue Jays, and Mets.)
I love that the Yankees are represented by black, the color of their fans' cold, dead souls.
ReplyDeleteI'd also be curious to see a version of this map for Canada. I'm guessing there'd be a lot of Red Sox fans on the east coast, lots of Blue Jays fans in Ontario, and a mix of, I dunno, Red Sox / Yankees / Dodgers / Mariners in western Canada.
Most interesting: it looks like the White Sox take Chicago proper, but the Cubbies have the entire rest of the media market.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Giants fan but a little sad that the A's couldn't get any love here.
ReplyDeleteRight; the Cubs get all of the relatively uninhabited areas (and DuPage County) while the Sox get Cook, Will, Kankakee and Lake (IN).
ReplyDeleteWhat team are Utah and Idaho rooting for (ignoring the Yankees' black)? Maybe I'm too colorblind to read this infographic- give me something clickable, hoverable, or just a list of data somewhere.
ReplyDeleteNot even Alameda County, you know, the one the Coliseum is named for.
ReplyDeleteI am taking comfort in my team's getting excellent value for their money, as rated by marginal wins, but it'd be nice to have more fans.
