OR A BAD TITLE, EVEN? THAT COULD KILL A SHOW PRETTY GOOD: Even though it grossed nearly $100 million domestically and got solid reviews, Edge of Tomorrow was viewed as an under-performer. So, apparently, it's being retitled for home media as Live, Die, Repeat (which was the tagline used to promote the movie). Unclear if this is just a packaging/promotional thing, or if the actual titles in the film are being changed as well.

Not, "A Cruise by any other name would sell as sweet(ly)?"
ReplyDeleteCruise has had an awful time with titling of late--"Jack Reacher" (which is solid, even if Cruise is not the books' Reacher) went through several variations before settling on that, and this was originally titled "All You Need Is Kill," which sounds like the worst Beatles song ever.
ReplyDeleteAll You Need Is Kill? That is just a RANCID title. I'm trying to think if I've ever heard a worse one.
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad they wanted to sell it more as a Tom Cruise film than an Emily Blunt film. (Although his role is the bigger one.) "The Angel of Verdun" is an awesome title.
ReplyDeleteFWIW, I really, really liked the movie and plan to rewatch it. It's one of those bendy movies where you want to see if everything holds together after you've seen how it ends.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more. It is definitely one I am going to purchase on Blu-Ray along with Guardians as its rewatch factor is high. Actually, IMO there are very few Cruise films (Vanilla Sky, Reacher) which aren't stop and watch on cable.
ReplyDeleteCruise is definitely one odd bird, but he's very good at choosing film roles that 1) suit him and 2) are in entertaining films. Knowing what he can pull off, and periodically reaching just a bit beyond that is a real talent of his. I'm sad I missed this movie in theaters. It looked like fun!
ReplyDeleteOut of curiosity, has this been done before? I can't imagine that changing a movie's name AFTER its wide release will be anything other than confusing to consumers. People who liked the movie will have a hard time finding it, and people who never saw it in theaters will think, "I haven't heard of this Tom Cruise movie before. What crappy straight-to-DVD movie is this?"
ReplyDeleteAlso, as a side note, I enjoyed the Cruise-Diaz parodic action movie Night and Day, which also suffered from a horrible title.
Apparently it's a straight translation of the Japanese title, which makes me hope the novel was translated with some more care to idiom.

ReplyDelete"Edge of Tomorrow" sounds like a soap opera or a Sidney Sheldon novel. The title change sounds like a good move to me.
