TWITTER'S LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES: In yet another sign that Twitter may be crossing over the bell curve from hip to passe,
Tom Hanks is now tweeting. Amusingly, he still has 1.6 million fewer followers than Felicia Day does. Who's the bigger star now, Tom?
It occurred to me yesterday, when I saw an AP story about celebrities tweeting the need for help to Haiti, that the kind of news story I'd most like to see die is the one that is built around celebrity tweets. It is just not news that Ben Stiller and Paris Hilton tweeted that Haiti needs help ((a) duh; and (b) laziest and most inconsequential form of public service ever) or that Soleil Moon-Frye tweeted that Brittany Murphy seemed like a nice girl, so sad. The practice of quoting celebrity tweets rather than getting actual quotes from people relevant to the story already seems beneath the threshold for journalistic professionalism, but elevating that practice to the point of the story is too much.
ReplyDeleteI kind of love Tom Hanks, but why is he signing off on his tweets? And as "Hanx" no less! His kids really should have done a better job explaining Twitter to him.
ReplyDeleteI echo the kind of love for Tom Hanks and am very excited about his announced directing/acting project with Julia Roberts.
