WE HAVE YET AGAIN BEEN EGREGIOUSLY OVERLOOKED: Based on what I'm sure was an accurate, adequate, and well-designed survey, Time gives us a list of the "best" and "most essential" blogs of the year, as well as a list of "overrated" ones. We're not on any of the lists, but I'm sure you have suggestions for other essentials, as well as places where Time got it wrong (Double X over Jezebel in the post-post-post-post-feminist (I think that's where they fall, but I may be off by a "post" or two) blog space seems a contentious choice), so let's do our own survey here in the comments. (Note: we make no claims as to the statistical reliability of such a survey.)

16 comments:

  1. I cannot stand Double X - either the idea or the execution. Style sections are bad enough - do we really need to tag all stories about/of interest to women to MAKE SURE that people know that? Because women are too dumb to figure out what they want to read based on the headline? Because men might otherwise stumble into some story that's not about them (heaven forbid)? I don't know, but it's yet another reason I get mad at myself whenever I find myself reading Slate. (Other reasons: Saletan, Rosenfeld.)  Plus, the posts fail to be particularly insightful about feminism. Jezebel is vastly superior, as are Feministe, Feministing, and Historiann. (I think 'third wave' is the better term.) But until Walter Dellinger gets his own blog, I'll keep heading over there on occasion.

That said, The Awl and Shorpy are pretty cool. Isaac, if you're not reading Shorpy, you should be.

Phew -- because I think the leading lawyer in that field may be conflicted out.

Jorge Garcia's blog is a great read. This is a new post-Lost blog but there is the link on that page to his prior one.

Ooh, good call on Shorpy.  Remember when one had to go to the Chicago Historical Society to find this stuff?

It's been referenced here before, but Linda Holmes' NPR blog is also very interesting - I especially like the morning rundown http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/

I cannot stay in these comments any longer.  My life (and workday) is going down the rabbit hole of Clients From Hell, Popehat.com, Jorge Garcia, and Shorpy.  Damn you, ALOTT5MA, for asking your interesting reader community for interesting links!

Slaughterhouse 90210 is totally entertaining for those obsessed with both books and pop culture (aka, pretty much everyone here)

    Heh.  From clientsfromhell.net:

Me: “Good afternoon, we’ve noticed that you haven’t paid the entire amount due on your bill.”
Client: ”We haven’t received an invoice.”
Me: ”Then how did a check show up with the invoice number on it in the memo field? We appreciate the timely payment, but it’s about 75 dollars short of the payment due.”
Client: ”You know this is a church group right? We don’t have to pay taxes, and you realize you go to hell for lying, right?”
Me: ”Well if you check the invoice, there is no sales tax applied, but you realize you go to hell for theft too, correct?”

I second Monkey See, and suggest that most people here might enjoy www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/

Oh, and Tom and Lorenzo's coverage of Project Runway, PR related things, and fashion generally is always great. http://projectrungay.blogspot.com/

Prob too late to the party, but if you're into design at all, I'd definitely check out unhappyhipsters.com, which features images taken from Dwell with hilarious new captions.

Top Chef fans should head to http://bloggingtopchef.blogspot.com/, which then has further Top Chef recap links. Very awesome.
