GUESS HE'S AN XBOX AND I'M MORE ATARI: Glee has made some awfully strange song choices over its season and change--sometimes they'll pay off (Dianna Agron's "It's A Man's Man's Man's World" from the repeat last night really worked, for instance)--but I really can't see quite how Gwyneth Paltrow singing Cee-Lo Green's "F**k You" (in its "Forget You" version) is going to work. Gwyneth actually can sing--she credibly performed "Bette Davis Eyes" in Duets, and is trying her hand at country in her upcoming film, but I'm not sure I can see her pulling off the soul needed for this one to work.

I don't even know anymore. Sometimes Glee is so trancendently nonsensical that it makes me feel dizzy. I can no longer tell if I'm laughing because something's funny or laughing because something's making me uncomfortable. It's Kaufmanesque. Watersian.
ReplyDelete"Gwyneth Paltrow singing a bowlderized version of 'Fuck You' by Cee-Lo Green" is as good an image as any to represent my confusion.
I'm thisclose to bailing on Glee. I started watching the first episode and had to turn it off because it was so shrill and self-indulgent, and now I've got all five episodes sitting in my DVR. My bottom three shows, as far as priority goes, are The Defenders, Castle, and Hawaii Five-0 (in that order), and yet I find myself watching all of those over Glee.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if there was anyone (outside of those who self-describe as Gleeks) who rooted harder for the show when it was good, but I don't know if it's good anymore.
I should say, first epsiode of this season.
ReplyDeleteIt's been very up and down--much of Grilled Cheesus is quite good (due largely to Chris Colfer's performance), but the characterization has been so ridiculously inconsistent and nonsensical as to annoy even me. That said, there are small joys--the performance of "Touch A Touch A Touch A Touch Me" was spectacular, even though it made (at best) limited sense for Emma's character.
ReplyDeleteGlee no longer makes sense and it's just up to the viewers whether we care or not. The eps with the best ratings have been the ones that made the least sense (the themed ones - Britney, for example), meaning Murphy et al have no real impetus to attempt to regain any sort of continuity. I basically just fast forward to the musical numbers at this point.
ReplyDeleteI am over the guest stars/theme nights. It was cool when it was NPH, and I enjoy John Stamos, but Britney was awful, and Gwyneth Paltrow? Blech.
ReplyDeleteThe kids can sing, so let them.
Should the fact that Gwyneth Paltrow is a pretentious cyborg have any part in this discussion? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteI do wonder what William Joel will think of her performance.

I just wish Paltrow would rap.
ReplyDeleteDan, watch the duets episode. I thought it was far and away the best episode of this season. And by all means, skip the Britney Spears episode.
ReplyDeleteWhat Billy Joel / Gwyneth Paltrow connection am I missing?
ReplyDeleteOn Paltrow's insufferably self-centered advice blog/website, she dropped Billy Joel's name when describing her dinner party, but called him William Joel because she's a pompous ass.
