BOXING DAY BLIZZAPOCALYPSE 2010: Nothing precipitating in Queen Village yet; please keep us updated on your neck of the woods. (I am supposed to go to Vick-Vikes tonight, but we'll see about that.)
The Weather Channel ranks NFL games on a 1-10 scale, with 1 being the most heavily impacted by weather. Eagles-Vikings received a ranking of 1:
Weather factors: Major weather impact! Snow, heavy at times, will cover the field. NW winds occasionally gusting over 40 mph will make passing/kicking games very challenging.
Was scheduled to fly from Long Island to Chicago tonight - rescheduled to this morning (without change fee - thanks, Southwest!) Had a lousy middle seat, but thank goodness I changed - my flight for tonight is already cancelled, as are most of the flights out of Islip today.Didn't see a single flake before I left NY at 8:30am.
In Chicago - 2 inches on the ground. Alas, my shovelers are all still in NY.
Out here in Wynnewood PA, I'd say we've gotten a half-inch to an inch on the driveway and cars in the last hour (not so much on the grass though); the pace seems to be picking up. Mostly, we're a bit bummed, because we were supposed to go to the Barnes Foundation today with family who intended to drive in from Arlington VA -- when they heard the reports this morning encouraging travelers to, well, not, we had to reschedule.
Delta flight from Detroit to DCA for late this afternoon was cancelled last night. Delta originally tried to re-book through ATL late tomorrow night, but I managed to find a flight to Dulles. Given that the "weather event" hasn't really materialized in DC, I'm not sure my office is going to believe me when I say I'm not going to be there tomorrow.
Blizzardy in NYC. Had to drive out to Long Island and back to retrieve my daughter from a sleepover. Out was fine; back, not so fine. Also had to food shop...major lines on Long Island (though that never happens in NYC). Basically, I was a glutton for punishment.
Initially delayed for weather forty minutes flying back to Chicago from Tulsa but then restored to on time only to get a ninety minute delay for mechanical issues. Whoops!
The shrieking is subsiding in Charlotte. We got 3-5 inches and an advisory for black ice tomorrow. Hoping that means I can stretch vacation for at least a couple of hours.
Here in Northern Virginia we have just a dusting. We left NY last night, 2 days ahead of schedule, and had a surprisingly easy trip down the NJ Turnpike. I suspect those planning to travel tonight and tomorrow won't have the same luck. Hope everyone stays safe!
Still at my parents' house on LI- they have food and cable here, which I don't have at my Brooklyn apt. They have about 7" of snow- expecting up to about 15". My sister is in from CA- supposed to fly out tomorrow, but doubt she will get out. I'm happy I have a AWD for when I have to try to get out. For now, it's movies.
Wait a second. 58% of my total knowledge about football comes from the old George Carlin Football v. Baseball routine. I thought, based on that, that they don't postpone games on account of weather. Was I misinformed? Because I was thinking I might actually try watching the Blizzard Bowl tonight.
They really don't. But given that it's still snowing, (a) I don't know how you plow the stadium lots during the game and (b) keep the roads passable post-game at midnight.
It's presumably for fan safety, rather than player wussiness. Getting 70,000+ folks to and from the staduim at night in the midst of a blizzard doesn't seem as prudent as it did in the past.
Also, I think after the past three weeks they've had, if you left it up to a vote amongst Vikings players whether or not their franchise gets moved to Los Angeles, then the LA Football Team to Be Named Later (leave the Vikings name back in Minnesota for when they get a franchise back) would be a certainty.
Snowing in Concord, MA up to NH. Visibility on the back roads is nil, on the highway it isn't too bad. We're supposedly looking at 16-20 inches by tomorrow morning, but we'll see how that goes.
I finally caved and bought a rain coat today, pretty much guaranteeing that Los Angeles will get no more rain this season. But it's still cold here. Y'know, for here.
Chicago is mellow. We got about an inch, maybe two, this morning, nothing since. The wind is kinda nasty, but it's clear, so there shouldn't be any problem getting in or out of here. Of course, with all the planes out of position, who knows what's going where tomorrow.
Thanks, Marsha! Had a feeling I would hear from you. :-) She's leaving from Austin and it looks like her flight originates here so crossing our fingers that it is safely in place this evening. Although she wouldn't mind it being delayed an hour or two if they could tell her tonight so she could sleep a little later!
Visiting my family in Portland, OR; no snow, just rain. My flight back to NYC isn't until Tuesday night, so I'm hoping that things clear up there by then. Stay safe and warm everyone!
We flew in from Tulsa last night and after the snow stopped, our delay disappeared (it was only 40 minutes) only to be replaced with an equipment related one. She should have no problem.
Marsha - so glad you made it out ahead of the weather! ("We've got to get going if we're going to stay ahead of the weather...") Snow on Long island started around 10 am, got heavy around 2 pm, so getting you and Brian out early worked out to be a great plan.
I'm hibernating in my Queens apartment right now. Haven't turned on the tv, but it looks like about a foot on the ground. I greatly enjoyed my favorite television traditions of the first snowstorm of the season: 1. Sending weatherpeople outside in the intense wind and snow to announce that it's snowing. 2. Sending reporters to Home Depot to report on the rush on shovels and salt. 3. Creating the special "Winter Storm 2010" logo for all weather reports.
So we didn't get nearly that much, although it's pretty hard to estimate given the drifting that's going on presently. It is very windy out, and we've had the power flicker a few times... but it has to stay on because we're right in the middle of catching up on this past season of Dexter. Also, my sister-in-law is flying in tonight from SLC, which means I have to leave the apt eventually.

Flurries in Society Hill. If it hasn't reached you yet, Adam, it should be there in about 30 seconds.
ReplyDeleteFlurries in Gladwyne, but with heavy winds now, thus ending our outing to Starbucks Suburban Square.
ReplyDeleteIn Walkerville, MD (SisterTab's town) there was a light snow on Christmas Day, which was perfect -- pretty to look at, then an immediate melting away.
ReplyDeleteNo snow in Houston. Slated to fly back to NYC on Tuesday. We'll see how that goes.
ReplyDeleteYou're seeing them on Tuesday . . . DAB is trapped in Bucks Cty.
ReplyDeleteFlurries picked up in Center City in the past half-hour.
ReplyDeleteEagles-Vikings game has been postponed until Tuesday evening.

Warnings and Advisories have been cancelled for Fairfax County, VA. They're now saying about an inch.
ReplyDelete65 and crystal clear. Oh, wait. I live in California. You weren't talking to me.
ReplyDeleteIt's been raining since we arrived in France on Wednesday, but I haven't seen one snowflake, snowmound, or snowhill. Thank God! Helsinki, it's not!!

ReplyDeleteOK...inside and warm now. Happy snow everyone!

ReplyDeleteAlso, this means on Tuesday I've got Toy Story 3 on Ice at 3pm and then Eagles at 8whatever. Fun day.

ReplyDeleteHad to take the dog out tonight in NYC. It was misery.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter has a flight to Chicago at 8:30 tomorrow am. Any updates on how it's looking there?

Did she get here ok, kenedy jane?

ReplyDeleteShe did. The flight left out of Austin a little late but she got there fine and is officially freezing with her thin Texas blood!
