OKAY, BUT HOW MANY CAN YOU USE IN A SENTENCE? Dr. Robert Beard believes he has determined the 100 most beautiful words in the English language. "Moist" did not make the cut, but "diaphanous," "insouciance," "propinquity" and "tintinnabulation" did.
"The woebegone ingenue, partially obscured in the penumbras of the earthen pit (redolent of petrichor), looked up with the incipient epiphany of ineffable fear at her host, who was clad only in a diaphanous robe of gossamer silk, as his earlier murmurous and mellifluous suggestion that she commence an embrocation with the provided emollient took a most untoward turn into Kookoobananatown: 'PUT THE FUCKING LOTION IN THE BASKET!!!' he shrieked, a harbinger of doom in the offing."
You know what's funny? I don't think umbrella is all that beautiful a word in English but I've always liked it in French (parapluie--pronounced pair-a-ploo-EE).
I'd like to give Adam C. mad props for what he did up there.
My favorite word in English is ELEEMOSYNARY -- I love the way it sounds, its meaning (charitable), and it's also the title of a beautiful play by Lee Blessing that I adore, which has some wonderful other words in it and is a good play for readers of this blog as one of the characters is a girl who wins the National Spelling Bee (not a spoiler.)
"Petrichor" sounds like an evil corporation in a James Cameron film. This Dr. Beard fellow may be right that it's an English word (though it's new to me), but it isn't beautiful. That said, I'm going to try to work Adam's phrase "redolent of petrichor" into a sentence this weekend, probably to describe wine.
Same thing with another word on that list, "fugacious," which sounds like a Glee mash-up of Fergie and the Fugs, although that might actually work, say "My Humps" blended with "I Like Boobs Alot."
I almost included pamplemousse but decided not to and then multiple people brought it up. Is there something intrinsic in pamplemousse that causes widespread similar reaction...like the anti-moist?
It's properly cater-cornered (Cater is from quatre, French for four, for "four cornered"); it being a homonym for cat or kitty, there are plenty of regional variations to reflect that (up here in the Midwest, I'd say kitty-corner seems to be prevalent).
I play a game with my students called Pamplemousse, which is a counting game where you can't say the magic number, any multiple of the magic number, or any number containing the magic number. Instead of those numbers, you have to say pamplemousse. I've had too many seventh and eighth graders pronounce it as "Pop the moose" to find the word beautiful. I am still a fan of parapluie. And écureuil, which means squirrel.
I'm curious which blogging platform you are using? I'm new to blogging and have been thinking about using the Blogger platform. Do you consider this is a good foundation to start with? I would be very grateful if I could ask you some questions through email so I can learn a bit more prior to getting started. When you have some free time, please contact me at: elliebuford@aol.com. Appreciate it
Excellent site you have here but I was curious about if you knew of any message boards that cover the same topics talked about here? I'd really love to be a part of online community where I can get comments from other experienced people that share the same interest. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks a lot!
Hello there! I know this is kinda off topic nevertheless I'd figured I'd ask. Would you be interested in trading links or maybe guest writing a blog post or vice-versa? My site addresses a lot of the same topics as yours and I believe we could greatly benefit from each other. If you're interested feel free to send me an e-mail. I look forward to hearing from you! Superb blog by the way!
Hello! My wife and I frequently write guest articles for other site owners to help increase publicity to our work, as well as provide excellent content to site owners. It's a win win situation! If you're interested feel free to email me at: alton-bland@googlemail.com so we can talk further. Appreciate it!
Heya just stumbled upon your website via Bing after I entered in, "Blogger: A List Of Things Thrown Five Minutes Ago" or perhaps something similar (can't quite remember exactly). In any case, I'm pleased I found it simply because your subject material is exactly what I'm looking for (writing a university paper) and I hope you don't mind if I collect some information from here and I will of course credit you as the reference.
Does your site have a contact page? I'm having a tough time locating it but, I'd like to send you an e-mail. I've got some suggestions for your blog you might be interested in hearing. Either way, great site and I look forward to seeing it grow over time.
I am curious which blogging platform you're running? I'm new to operating a blog and have been thinking about using the Vox platform. Do you think this is a good foundation to start with? I would be extremely grateful if I could ask you some questions through email so I can learn a bit more before getting started. When you have some free time, please be sure to contact me at: santo.fierro@gmail.com. Cheers
I do not know if it's just me or if everybody else experiencing issues with your blog. It looks like some of the written text in your posts are running off the screen. Can someone else please comment and let me know if this is happening to them too? This may be a problem with my web browser because I've had this happen before. Thanks
My developer is trying to persuade me to move to .
net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses. But he's tryiong none the less. I've been using WordPress on various websites for about a year and am worried about switching to another platform. I have heard fantastic things about blogengine. net. Is there a way I can import all my wordpress posts into it? Any help would be really appreciated!
Do you have a spam problem on this site; I also am a blogger, and I was wanting to know your situation; many of us have created some nice procedures and we are looking to exchange methods with others, be sure to shoot me an e-mail if interested.
Hey there. I noticed your site title, "Blogger: A List Of Things Thrown Five Minutes Ago" does not really reflect the content of your web site. When creating your website title, do you think it's most beneficial to write it for Search engine marketing or for your audience? This is something I've been struggling with simply because I want great search rankings but at the same time I want the best quality for my visitors.
Wow! This blog looks exactly like my old one! It's on a completely different topic but it has pretty much the same page layout and design. Superb choice of colors!
Have you ever thought about creating an e-book or guest authoring on other blogs? I have a blog based upon on the same ideas you discuss and would really like to have you share some stories/information. I know my audience would appreciate your work. If you're even remotely interested, feel free to shoot me an e-mail.
Hi would you mind stating which blog platform you're working with? I'm planning to start my own blog soon but I'm having a hard time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I'm looking for something unique. P.S Sorry for being off-topic but I had to ask!
The other day, while I was at work, my sister stole my apple ipad and tested to see if it can survive a twenty five foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My iPad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this is totally off topic but I had to share it with someone!

I was curious if you ever considered changing the structure of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 pictures.
Good day! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could get a captcha plugin for my comment form? I'm using the same blog platform as yours and I'm having trouble finding one? Thanks a lot!
This design is wicked! You obviously know how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost. ..HaHa!) Great job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
Howdy! Someone in my Myspace group shared this site with us so I came to take a look. I'm definitely loving the information. I'm bookmarking and will be tweeting this to my followers! Exceptional blog and wonderful design.
Hi! I realize this is kind of off-topic but I had to ask. Does building a well-established website such as yours take a lot of work? I am brand new to writing a blog but I do write in my diary on a daily basis. I'd like to start a blog so I can share my experience and feelings online. Please let me know if you have any kind of suggestions or tips for new aspiring blog owners. Thankyou!

Thanks for the props - the definition of "embrocation" supplied all the necessary inspiration.
ReplyDeleteAnd I second Meghan's love of parapluie (not to mention pamplemousse).

There's a lot of billingsgate at every Eagles game.
ReplyDeleteThe office next to mine is also a source of a metric eff-ton of billingsgate. (Entertainingly so, except when I'm on speakerphone.)
ReplyDeleteI've always loved that the word for umbrella in Spanish is paraguas - literally, "for waters."
ReplyDelete"Grapefruit" is another word that sounds better in french - pamplemousse!
I know that from Flight of the Conchords' "Foux de Fa Fa."
ReplyDeletePamplemousse!
ReplyDeleteAnanas!
Jus d'orange!
Boeuf!
Soup du jour!
Camembert!
Jacques Cousteau!
The line reading/singing of "Boeuf!" kills me every time.
catercornered? Don't they mean cattycorner?
