I'm guessing "Fairytale of New York" is relatively low because it's a duet? I would put it and "A New England" as my top two. (And "Days" is up there, but that's my incredibly pro-Kinks bias showing)
Possibly contrary to the ethos of the blog, I both have strong opinions and will decline to state them.(1)
But it has to be said: still shocking, still too horribly soon.
(1) Ok, fine: won't do quibbling on fine tuning of rankings or say which songs I'd boot, but England 2 Columbia Nil, Us Amazonians and Bad are notable omissions.
Two of my favorite Kirsty MacColl songs are missing from this list: "Fifteen Minutes" and "What Do Pretty Girls Do?" They're the first songs of hers that I ever heard, and they got me hooked. Maybe they're not among her 39 best, but they hold a special place in my heart.
That being said, "Fairytale of New York" deserves better. It's not only one of her best songs, it's one of the Pogues' best songs, too.
Good list, but yes, I would rank "A New England" and "Fairytale of New York" should be higher, as should "In These Shoes?" I'm in for a long road trip today and it's a good chance to revisit everything on the drive.
But mostly, again, so sad and too soon. I selfishly thnk of the ten years of brilliant songs we might have had to add to this list.

ReplyDeleteI'd have A New England, Caroline and He's On The Beach much higher. In fact, they'd probably be my top four, along with They Don't Know.

How did they miss her and Evan Dando doing Lou Reed's "Perfect Day"?

How did "My Affair" not make this list??

It is entirely possible that the answer to that question is "Evan Dando." Did you know that Evan Dando's middle name is "Your Mileage May Vary"?
