EXCUSE ME, MR. PRESIDENT, SIR, IT'S YOUR 11:30 PHOTO OPPORTUNITY - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO SOLD THE MOST GIRL SCOUT COOKIES: The Girl Scouts are experimenting with discontinuing sales of cookies beyond the "core six" varieties -- Thin Mints, Do-Si-Dos, Trefoils, Samoas (Caramel deLites), Lemon Chalet Cremes and Tagalongs (Peanut Butter Patties) -- the top five of which account for 77% of all their cookie sales.

  1. If my sales -- er, my daughter's sales -- are any indication, Thin Mints alone comprise close to half of all boxes sold.

  2. A colleague of mine, forgetting the name "Samoas," said to me "I'd like a box of the Coconut Sins."  I thought that was pretty much perfect.

I am pouring an entire sleeve of Thin Mints out for homies lost.

I did the cookie identification test and got them all right in the minimum number of tries.  I am now equal parts ashamed and hungry.

I was the troop cookie mom for 4 or 5 years.  Once a year cookies were delivered to our area by semi truck and I would then take a rented U-Haul to bring our troop's stash to be stored at my house.  Yes, stored at my house.  No, it wasn't at all tempting...  It's so odd now that I have to track down a GS to buy my cookies.

For the record, if you are supplied by the other bakery, Do-Si-Dos are Peanut Butter Sandwiches and Trefoils are Shortbreads which, according to today's earlier discussion, "begs the question" of why an organization that has such a massive sales event every year can't standardize.

  9. Thank you for reminding me of that great SNL skit.   "Oh, this is the part of the job I hate."

Growing up in Ohio, Samoas were always Caramel deLites and Tagalongs were Peanut Butter Patties.

  11. I've always quite liked Samoas, but in recent years, I've been getting boxes of the Lemon Chalet cookies.  Very good with tea.

And, yep, that SNL skit is awesome.

  12. I honestly had no idea they sold any other kinds of cookies than the ones listed.  Thin Mints for my husband & Coconut Sins for me.  In fact, this discussion reminds me that I might have some Thin Mints in the deep freeze.

  13. I tried the Dulce de Leche last year and liked them enough that I bought another box from the munchkins in front of the grocery store.

My mom was a Brownie troop leader long past when my sisters and I moved up to Juniors and Cadettes. We always kept the cases at our house. We were not tempted. We were well trained-- my mom never let us eat the cookies she baked for Christmas either-- they were for gifts-- for teachers, troop leaders, dance class instructors, neighbors and friends. We never got to eat them until after Christmas and by then, the house was so filled with cookies and candies that we couldn't be bothered.

I too find it odd that I have to hunt down cookies to buy. I live in Center City Philadelphia. I get my groceries delivered so I don't have that opportunity to buy in the parking lot. No one in my office has school aged daughters. Last year, my partner bought them from the maintenance man at her office whose daughter was selling them. I have to get several degrees of separation out to buy cookies, which is slightly odd for someone with a Silver Award, the second highest honor in Girl Scouting (I don't get to whip that achievement out often).

This is too many comments for me to not chime in with my 25 year grudge: Our girl scout troop met on Thursdays, and I of course had Hebrew School.  They assured me they would provide me with all the materials I needed to keep up with the badge-earning at home, and I, like a chump, paid my dues every week with high hopes.  The only "materials" they ever gave me were the cookie sales forms, and I, like an even bigger chump, sold my little heart out.  You've never seen anything as sad as a girl scout sash with only one badge on it.

    I hate those damn cookies.

  17. I was bemoaning the lack of cookie sales in my federal government office.  And then I got a call on my cell phone from my niece, offering to sell me cookies.
