HEY, H.O.V.A. MAN, HEY, DAPPER DAN: Will Smith and Jay-Z have teamed up to remake Annie for the big screen, with Willow Smith to star.  Fill out the rest of the cast, if you like.

(No, I don't know if that Don Budge fellow is available.  Yes, we've argued here multiple times as to whether the Rob Marshall/ABC version is better than the John Huston/big screen one: 1st, 2nd, 3rd times.  I'm still right.)

I do not doubt for a second that awful stage parents Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are going to surgically remove the white parts of Willow's eyes just to give her appropriately Annie-like creepy pupil-only eyeballs.

  2. The question in my mind is will the remake at all address race/segregation?  You got a little of that in the Marshall version because of the casting of Audra McDonald, which was answered with "he's Oliver Warbucks, he can do whatever he wants,"

(Also, Sarah Hyland from Modern Family played one of the supporting orphans in the Rob Marshall version.)

Matt, that was my second thought too.  My first thought was, "I don't want another Annie remake from anyone."

I think the real question is if Daddy Warbucks will be black or white...different racial politics depending on that, obviously.

He has to be black, right?  Because if he's not black, then it's just Diff'rent Strokes.

If Cee Lo Green doesn't get to be Daddy Warbucks, then God is indeed dead.

  9. Are we assuming "rap mogul who's lost touch with the streets/his childhood" as the Warbucks-type?

    Also, Taye Diggs for Rooster?

Aren't we assuming Will's gonna play Daddy Warbucks, as he made a movie with Jaden (Pursuit of Happyness) and he owes one to his daughter. Taye Diggs would be a perfect Rooster,

that last post was from me.

  12. Isn't it a much better twist if Will plays Rooster?  I believe we're coming close to 20 years since he played someone mischievous (Six Degrees).

Are we all in agreement that Wilow Smith should not be famous? That "Whip My Hair" song of hers...there are no words. Her whole existence creeps me out. And the outfits...no, I'm not feeling it.

    P. Diddy as Daddy Warbucks? Probably someone older. It should probably be an all black cast, right?

I don't want Taye Diggs in this movie...I like him.

  14. James Earl Jones for Daddy Warbucks!

I mean Beyonce is going to be Grace right?  This is her film vehicle to movie stardom or something right?

I'm glad that Willow Smith exists, simply because there would be no Jimmy Fallon / Neil Young / Bruce Springsteen acoustic version of "Whip My Hair," which is one of my favorite five-minute blocks of time ever.

Can I just be the crank here who notes that Annie really isn't that good of a show in the first place?  (That said, if the movie happens to be on cable I note what point it's at just so I can watch the non-singing portions of Edward Herrman as FDR.)

  18. I'm still waiting for her to do a sequel to Oh No She Didn't! with Ali Larter and Idris Elba.

It won't be an all-black cast.  Punjab is going to be like Paul Reiser or Owen Wilson or something.

  20. Punjab doesn't appear in the musical; he was added back for the Huston film from the comic strip.  I'm picturing (if they do it) Jonah Hill (though, okay, that just repeats Get Him To The Greek) or Kal Pann.

How about Russel Brand as Punjab?

Who's taking Carol Burnett's role? I'm thinking Courtney Love...not much of a stretch there.

Sue...totally agree with James Earl Jones...I just heard his voice on a commercial; that's when I thought of it.
