BUT THEN AGAIN, NO: Both Kim and I are too tired and uninspired to do the full back-and-forth on Idol tonight, though we reserve the right to supplement come morrow. Suffice it to say that none of the attempts to change one's box (more mellow! less Jacob-y! more fire!) have inspired us to reach for our thesaurii to find new words for "awesome," and at this point I have already seen all the Pia and Haley that I ever need to see. So, sorry, which actually wasn't that hard to say after all.
I so agree about Pia. And I officially miss Simon. If Simon had told her "it's boring, don't do another ballad," she NEVER would have dared to come back out and sing a ballad that has been done to death on this show. None of the judges or Jimmy Iovine have come close to giving anyone a kick in the pants to get better.
ReplyDeleteBest of the night: Lauren
ReplyDeleteBottom 3: Thia, Naima, and Stefano
A few other thoughts: I'm tired of the ballads from Pia, and I also double-dare her to pick a song that hasn't been done to death on the show.
Paul makes more sense with a guitar, but I still saw no reason to be excited by his performance. He makes Jason Castro's range look immense.
Casey did a nice job with Your Song, but not a great job. It's such an excellent song---a better contestant would have knocked it out of the park.
Jacob's histrionic singing was less annoying this week, but man, does he sing ugly.
Scotty did fine. I have no problem with his inevitable trip to the top four, cheerfully hanging out in his box.
That was me, btw.
ReplyDeleteHijack: BLAIS!!
ReplyDeleteWait ... Jason Castro? Is that Kermit the Crunchy Muppet? I think Paul's better than that guy, but maybe I just find him more likeable. Or I have the wrong guy.
ReplyDeleteI love me some James Durbin. I do not like Scotty, but I also don't like Josh Turner, making Scotty, for me, a cheesy karaoke imitation of a country style that does nothing for me in the first place. I don't really miss Simon except for every week right after Scotty performs. I want Lauren to do well.
ReplyDeleteI've realized that I don't actually like a single one of the contestants on this season. I hate Casey the least by far, but he's not all that great. And with a lot of padding, I think that this week's performance show was somehow less interesting than last week's bizarre results show.
ReplyDeleteI did, however, enjoy The Awl's Move-by-Move Divanalysis of Jacob Lusk's 'American Idol' Performance from last week.
Ack! I thought this post would be safe from TC spoilers (won't have a chance to watch until later). Although, I gues "BLAIS!!" could mean, "can you believe he choked again?" Ok, I've now introduced enough doubt to no longer be spoiled. Phew.
ReplyDeleteI had the same thought (down to, well, I guess if I have to root for someone, it'll be Casey). The follow-up thought, which just occurred to me as I was typing, is that this frees up several hours a week.
ReplyDeleteI think that the spoiler protection for reality series finales only runs until the end of the west coast airing. Normal episodes of reality series get 24h.
ReplyDeleteIn general, kind of a meh night (but I kind of expected that). That being said (in no particular order):
ReplyDeleteScotty: Nicely country-fied. The note at the end should've been there last week. Needs to show more...range. The theme weeks aren't helping. He also needs to move away from the Josh Turner Sound a bit; he doesn't have Josh Turner's sense of pitch.
Naima: Brave. Not my bag, but still better than I Shot the Tambourine Man. Not sure how it's going to play with the AI audience, though.
Paul: The "tender moments" need to stop. Dude, show some vocal range. And never wear that suit again.
Pia: OK, we get it. You can saaaang. Move around. Up the tempo. Drop the stirpper heels.
Stefano: Dude. No. Wrong direction. Still.
Thia: Sorry, is she still here?
James: Entertaining as always. Dude needs a band. And I need to stop saying "dude."
Lauren: People were into this. I absolutely hated it. As normal, I don't think she got the song. The shininess is wearing off for me.
Casey: Don't call it a comeback. But, it's what he needed to do. For me, he needs to find his stylistic space again. And this doesn't refer to his beard. Time for the stand-up to make a reappearance.
Jacob: Starting to show more control, but I think it's being hammered into his head by the producers. Feels a little too contrived to me, honestly.
Haley: Best so far for her, but I *really* just don't get her at all and think she's fake.
Bottom Three: Thia, Stefano, and Naima (though I still think the competition needs her a bit longer).
Going Home: Thia, Stefano.
(Less wordy than last week's, but I think it's mostly because I have less to say. *shrug*)
Oh, I wasn't suggesting that Meghan's post be removed, just more or less directly conveying the three thoughts that went through my head when I read it. For what it's worth, I almost didn't come to ALOTT5MA today, because I knew there was some risk of being spoiled (as I've been avoiding my other pop culture destinations), but when I saw that there was a TC post, I thought this one might be safe. Still, I took the risk knowingly.
ReplyDeleteAs for the spoiler protection rules, now that you mention it, I'm curious as to the justification for longer protection for what would seem to be less important episodes. Is it that the culture at large is more likely to widely report/discuss the ultimate winners, so the reasonable expectation of spoiler protection doesn't apply, or is it some more objective standard?
My sense is that people make sure to watch finales right away, whereas ordinary episodes may sit on the DVR a little bit -- and that's in part *because* of the likelihood of spoiler contamination for finales.
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense, and ordinarily I would, too. I blame the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Silver Spring for this (and a multitude of other sins that I needn't catalog here), as I got stuck staying there during my hotel tour of the metro DC area (my apartment got badly flooded from a burst hot water pipe two weeks ago) and they do not carry Bravo and the internet connection was too slow for me to download off of iTunes this morning.
ReplyDeleteI watched the whole thing last night, and I'm going to speak in defense of Haley.
ReplyDeleteI loved that! I have never enjoyed "Bennie and the Jets," ever, and I think now that it's because I didn't get the joy in the lyrics until she sold it to me. I totally want to get to know those guys, and I am, as well, alarmed and amused by how stoned they are!
Seriously, that was so much fun. I'm not an avid watcher of the livecast these days, but I feel like there's haterade going on here.
I was stunned to see all the love for Haley on the post-show reviews at USA Today and TV Line. I thought she was terrible, but maybe I'm just missing something.
ReplyDeleteI'm waiting to see what happens when Pia does an upbeat song. Let's hope she sticks to her promise to do River Deep Mountain High next week. I do think she has the best voice of all the contestants, though I'd never buy an album of hers if it's going to be this ballad-heavy.
Jacob looks like a very unhappy baby when he sings.
ReplyDeletegod I hate Haley. I want to shake her and tell her to a) stop smiling and b) STOP "GROWLING" GAH.
ReplyDeleteBut then I love Paul and his Nudie suit.
Also love Paul and his clothes and anything and everything about him. I've totally turned fan-girl about him and I never do that about anyone on Idol. I'm spending 3 minutes every Wednesday night typing "Squeeeeeeee" onto Twitter like a 12 year old girl. In regards to theme nights, I thought they weren't going to do that this season. That it was going to be a free for all so people could "do their thing, dog".
ReplyDeleteMy standard Twitter reaction to Paul performances is "swoon."
