IT'S WHAT YOU WEAR FROM EAR TO EAR -- AND NOT FROM HEAD TO TOE -- THAT MATTERS: On June 12, the producers of a new Broadway Annie revival will be hosting open auditions for red-headed (and other) girls ages six through twelve. As the link suggests, this could be a hell of a reality show, "Toddlers & Tiaras-meets-Glee, with a mega payoff ... It could be inspiring. It could be weird and twisted. It could be featured on The Soup." Online auditions are also available. Below the fold, from 1982, Miss Sarah Jessica Parker sings "I Don't Need Anything But You":

  1. Ohhhh, my daughter would go bananas for this.  And she will love going to see the musical!  Thanks for posting.

I'm 99% sure that's Molly Ringwald sitting on the piano bench. She was in the touring production of Annie and may have even been in the Broadway show around the same time.

I did this cattle call for the 1982 movie. I'd recommend it as an experience for anyone with a kid the right age - it was a blast and a VERY educational experience about stage mothers.

The documentary Life After Tomorrow is terrific for musical theater/Annie lovers. Great conversations with vets from the original Broadway run and touring casts about the craziness, fun and also some of the challenges that came with being a part of something that huge. Absolutely worth watching.

  5. Actually, I think that's the girl who played one of the daughters on Kate and Allie

  6. Marsha - I also seem to recall that there were a lot of free Ovaltine products in the deal.

  7. I loved "Life After Tomorrow."  For those who liked that, I think you'd also like the documentary "Every Little Step" - about the audition process for the Broadway revival of A Chorus Line.

Every Little Step is great, especially to see Tyce D'Orio (of SYTYCD fame) being a total show-off.  Hilarious.

  9. Yeah, that's Allison Smith, I think.  (god I loved Kate and Allie)

The guy in Every Little Step who is reading with all the auditioners (he's in like 5 minutes of it) is one of my best friends since childhood.

  13. Allison Smith took over the role of Annie after SJP.  I still have my signed Playbill from her run!

OOh - right you are. Messing up my 80s icons there!

Sue, yes, there were free Ovaltine products. I remember liking them, but never having them again...

Loved Life After Tomorrow. Still haven't seen Every Little Step, but obviously need to, given that A Chorus Line is one of only two shows I've ever paid to see three times on Broadway. (The other is Chicago.)
