ROLL CALL! It's been awhile since we've done one of these, and after a week like this it's appropriate for us to, once again, figure out and introduce who the heck is reading this site. So, regulars and lurkers alike, please share with us the following, to the extent you're willing to share:
- Hometown
- Age
- Occupation
- Song you'd put on a "songs of summer" mixtape/playlist/whatever-it's-called-this-week.
P.S. If you're not yet on
our Twitter list and would like to be added, please share your handle.
P.P.S. And here's why Watts is awesome - she's compiling
the ALOTT5MA Songs of Summer video playlist.

Summer song: I wasn't actually born when Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell was released, but it's one of my two favorite songs of all-time (I Want You Back by the Jackson Five is the other) and, according to a quick Internet search, made its way up the charts in the summer of 1987. So I'll go with that. Please make sure any mix tape includes the Marvin/Tammi recording and not the vastly inferior Diana Ross version.

Songs of Summer: Jack & Diane, Abracadabra, Thunder Road, Melissa, Into the Mystic, I Walk the Line, Suspicious Minds, Devils & Dust all spring to mind, or should that be Summer to mind.
The most memorable party of my freshman year at Penn was an enormous house party during Spring Fling weekend. One of the guys who regularly gigged at Smokey Joe's that year was playing a solo guitar set (amped) from a balcony, and as with many parties that went late into the night, the cops eventually showed up and told him to shut it down. He prevailed upon them to let him play one more song, and they said OK and retreated. As soon as he launched into the first line of American Pie, all of the partygoers erupted -- we knew we'd have another 15-20 minutes of party time, easy.

I took my dad to see Lyle Lovett in concert earlier this year; when they sang that one, everybody in the audience sang along and then shouted the "Kiss my a**" line. In fact, I think it would make a fun discussion topic to talk about good music choices for little kids. We spend a lot of time (and have a lot of fun) looking for non-kid-specific music to play and it would be nice to hear other people's thoughts. Recent successes for us include Shakira, "Single Ladies" by Beyonce, "Brimful of Asha" by Cornershop, "People are People" by Depeche Mode, and a Rusted Root song. -Law grad, now studying for the California bar. Haven't the slightest clue what's going to happen after that. Won't someone please think of the poor, downtrodden children of the Class of 2011?

I ADORE that Cake song - between junior and senior years of high school I got my first ever car of my own, a 1975 Dodge Dart Swinger. Then, a couple of years later, my first serious boyfriend got the Dart's cousin, a Plymouth Valiant. No bucket seats in either of our cars. I spent a lot of that summer riding the redneck love shotgun seat.

ReplyDeletePS - I want to request a guest post from the many children's/YA book editors we have reading the blog. I want dirt on what's new and exciting that I should be reading (okay, and also trying to make into movies...).

Most of my summer songs have been mentioned, but I'll add "Sing Me Spanish Techno" by New Pornographers (A little trivia about me: My son was about 3 when the song came out and we would listen to it over & over again, so my husband and I started calling the band the New Oceanographers. After 5 years of calling them by the wrong name, I'm not sure I'll be able to call them the New Pornographers ever again...)
And on Twitter: @emilygwynne
ReplyDeleteHoly smokes! I've read about you on BEQ's blog.

I had been told that it started at either F&M or Carlisle. I don't know which. Ben Reynolds really encouraged us to develop new traditions; the whole residential staff was of folks who hadn't worked for CTY before.

ReplyDeleteYeah, it was my roomate and my go-to song driving down the county roads in Iowa during college. Oh the joy of living 30 minutes from civilization.
