RED AND WHITE (NO BLUE): A couple of weeks ago, our friends at Pop Culture Happy Hour discussed local children's television of their youth. In Dallas, that show was Mr. Peppermint, later retooled into Peppermint Place, hosted by Jerry Haynes, better known as "Mr. Peppermint," who succumbed to Parkinson's today at 84. In addition to hosting the show, Haynes was one of the first eyewitnesses to the JFK assassination to be interviewed on TV and had small roles in a number of films (Robocop, Boys Don't Cry, Places in the Heart). More oddly, Haynes' son, Gibby, is lead singer of a band with a name not appropriate for printing on this blog, best known for their one hit "Pepper," which was purportedly based on Gibby's experiences at my high school.

  1. Matt, you can totally say BUTTHOLE SURFERS on this blog, even during daytime hours.

Why wouldn't one be able to say Butthole Surfers?  We can also say the names of bands like the Buzzcocks, Fucked Up, and TSOL, or the names of classic albums like Songs About Fucking or Never Mind the Bollocks, or the names of movies like The Spy Who Shagged Me or Baise Moi, or repeat the entirety of the famous fake review of Spinal Tap's Shark Sandwich:  "Shit sandwich."  They're just words; they won't hurt you.  We don't have skittish advertisers.

  5. We have as many skittish advertisers as skitless ones.

And, yes, we are a bit genteel around the chilluns.

When I was growing up, it was all about watching the Floppy Show.

    "Where's Floppy?  Here he is!"

This is sad day for my childhood - just the though of Mr. Peppermint brings a smile to my face. We spent many mornings before breakfast (before reruns of Mork and Mindy were allowed) watching Peppermint Place. He was a Dallas local celebrity way beyond his national fame, but a celebrity in our house first.  (Aside: Matt - where did you go to high school?)

  8. I'm a Lake Highlands alum (along with Chris Harrison of the Bachelor, Mark Salling of Glee, and Amy Acker of Alias and Angel).

Amy Acker, who I kind of like, is probably the most miscast actor of all time.

Ah, cross-town rivals! I am a JJ Pearce alum - although much less notable than Jessica Simpson (who didn't really graduate), Lane Garrison of Prison Break notoriety, and that lovely show on TV Land which didn't do much to improve upon high school stereotypes, "High School Reunion." I'm back in Dallas after many years away, and let's just say it's a very different feel in Richardson than it was when I was there. Nice to (online) meet a fellow neighbor! :)

  11. Sad news for this Plano alum (class of '89 just like Alan Tudyk).
