ReplyDeleteBased on track record and content, what are the odds that Stone pulls this off? I put it at about 3-2 in favor of it getting highbrow critical praise and about 5-1 against it actually being fun to watch. Note: I read and enjoyed The Power Broker.

Better yet, I put it at roughly even money that none of us ever get to see the "finished" product. Stone will make such a mish-mash of an admittedly difficult book to capture in a two-or-three-hour-movie (nb: I also read TPB, as well as all issued volumes of Caro's ongoing biography of LBJ, so I know how detailed Caro's writing can be) that HBO will probably wind up exercising whatever "kill fee" option they have under their deals with Meyer and Stone. Better that than damage their brand by airing Stone's predictably incoherent and tendentious take on a politician whose talent for multi-dimensional complexity and arbitrage of shifting political allilances (if you credit Caro's book as non-fiction) makes both Vito and Michael Corleone look like pikers.
