WE WILL SEE YOU ... TOMORROW NIGHT: Perhaps it was serendipitous that this occurred on the eve of the release of a Justin Timberlake scifi film regarding the condemned doing whatever they could to steal little bits of time to remain alive, but, wow, what a game. From the Freese error on the popup to the decision not to pinch-hit for Colby Lewis in the fifth, to Tony LaRussa calling in a starting pitcher to pinch-hit for a starting pitcher who had been announced as a pinch-hitter for the reliever scheduled to bat, to all the ridiculous glory of innings 7-11, wow. Thank you, baseball. Can we please have another?

It seems that everyone who's not me or my husband was enamored of Joe Buck using his dad's line. I thought it would have been a really cool thing to do...if he had delivered it with any emotion. It's been said before, many times, many ways, but Buck needs to stop calling baseball. He doesn't give a rat's patoot about it--though last night's game was almost enough to get him into it.

Because it was amazing. So good! Can't wait for tonight. Wondering if the bar near my house, which is a Texas Exes bar, will be rooting for the Rangers.

Nelson Cruz played that triple incredibly poor in the ninth inning. A) He wasn't playing deep enough in right to start with. In that situation, you have to be in the so called "no doubles" defense. Deep enough in the outfield where no ball can get behind you on the fly unless it is going out of the ballpark. B) He got a terrble break on the ball. C) He drifted back toward the wall instead of sprinting back toward the wall. All this allowed a catchable fly ball to fall in for a game tying triple. Then again, Cruz shouldn't have been out there. Endy Chavez, a much better defensive outfielder, pinched hit in the top of the ninth. He should've been inserted into the game for defensive purposes. He would've made the play on that fly ball easily.

That game was bananas. I loved it. Cardinals continue to walk, bumble, and CLUTCH a crazy Team-of-Destiny path. The only thing missing was a squirrel cameo.

So who do we, the fundametaly horseless, root for now? For empathetic reasons, I hope Texas wins. A loss for them is more likely to feel shameful, like a choke, while St. Louis players could lose and still be incredibly proud of their amazing resilience.

Both teams have kept Mike Ilitch from his WS trophy (that rightly belongs with his four Stanley Cups) during the last five years. I'm still rooting for meteor strike. But damn that was some fun baseball last night, even for an antagonistic neutral.

  6. I think that Joe Buck should be barred from annoucing Cardinals games and Tim McCarver should be barred from annoucing...uh...games.

To be honest, as a life-long Mets fan (and a Red Sox fan by marriage) I can't stand the Cards, and as a native New Yorker I can never root for Texas so I can't say I am rooting for either team. I watched the last three innings and regardless of the fact that I actively don't want either team to win, it was darn good baseball.

My wife doesn't want to see the Justin Timberlake movie because she thinks it looks too much like Logan's Run. Here's the difference between us: This makes her not want to see it, and makes me want to see it.

Best WS game 6 since 1986?

I ask this questoin far too frequently, but how is Joe Buck Fox's lead announcer for baseball and football?

The amount, variety, and volume of cursing at Chez Inertia last night was truly staggering. Exciting game? Yes. Insane? Yes. Satisfying for this Rangers fan? Definitely not. That being said, I predicted that this series would be anxiety (and possibly heart attack) inducing; it just sucks to be right.

I want to believe but it will be so difficult for the Rangers to overcome that crushing loss. Go Rangers!

Certainly to be preferred to Game 6 of the 2002 World Series.

  11. What an astounding game! I kept almost turning off the TV when the Cards kept finding a way to bring themselves back. My family in St. Louis have had the most atrocious year ever, starting last November with the sudden death of my brother-in-law. I'm not a believer in the afterlife, but this whole Cardinal season has me wondering whether he's somewhere pulling some strings. Last night's game? Totally his sense of humor. I'll be watching every inning tonight. Go Cards!

Kate, I am completely simpatico with you on everything you said, except that I'm married to a Cubs fan, so the Cardinals hatred is even stronger.

  13. Much better than 1993. 1991 has a claim, however.

  14. Also a Mets fan and I actually want the Cards to win...mostly because if Detroit couldn't get it, then St. Louis should. I root for cities when my team isn't in it. Well, except for Philly. :)

I admit, I did want to see Tony LaRussa lose very very much last night. But it would be so much better if he blows game 5 because he is an idiot, goes sees moneyball on a rain day and is upset with it because it doesn't give enough credit to managers, his team wins an exciting game 6, so some people forget that he outmanaged himself and tried to blame the telephone, and then only goes on to lose game 7. That would be epic. I do not care for this Tony LaRussa.

The great thing about game 6 was one could easily not watch the first 9 innings and not miss anything but Tony LaRussa reaction shots.

He can't show any emotion about it - he works for Fox Sports, not for the Cardinals. He's got to tread a very fine line. He was emotional, definitely.

  19. Other than being too easy on Joe Buck, I loved the first paragraph of Kate's comment. (What?!?)
