R.I.P., HERPES MONKEY: This did not end well. As Matt noted on Twitter, there were probably better ways to cross-promote Cameron Crowe's holiday flick We Bought A Zoo.

When the virus comes, and apparently that's soon, I would like to implore the future not to focus all of their energies on the Army of the Twelve Monkeys.  Also, the kid was hiding in the barn.

  2. They're considering retitling it--it's now "Maybe We Shouldn't Have Bought a Zoo."

This is so heartbreaking.  And infuriating.

Very much so.  I saw an interview with Jack Hanna this evening in which he say there are about 1500 Bengal tigers left on the entire planet.  And we killed 18 of them in Ohio yesterday.  Think about that for a second.  It really makes me incredibly angry.

Sorry, like a dope I didn't click through and read the article before commenting.  Didn't realize that figure was in the story.

There is more than one of these exotic animal farms in Ohio, which has the most lax regulations re: keeping exotic animals.  You need a permit to own a bear, but nothing to own non-native species like lions, tigers, etc.

There was a drive thru "African Animal Safari" about 45 minutes from where I grew up.  We always wanted to go, but my mom thought it was disgusting.  Even Cedar Point had Jungle Larry's - a weird exotic animal safari in the middle of an amusement park.

I saw an interview with Jack Hanna this morning on GMA - he was obviously really shaken up by it, but explained how impossible it was to tranquillize this many animals in such a wide open space.

I am a horrible person. Once I heard the full story, I immediately thought of this:

Yeah, as sad as all these animals being killed makes me--and that's a lot--I'm actually just really mad at Ohio for not having regulations in place.  Some random crazy guy should not be allowed to have 17 tigers.  Some random sane guy (or woman) shouldn't either.

Random sane people should be allowed to do as they please, so long as they don't hurt others.  I'd say more, but there's this Dreadful Line under my toes.
