GREEN FOURTEEN COSMOPOLITAN: Originally, I wasn't going to post anything about Beyonce and Jay-Z's baby naming decision, but then I overheard a heated discussion among several checkout ladies at my supermarket on the subject, and it was clear that this was Major News. So, yes, Blue Ivy Carter it is, and if you believe the chatterati, she's named for her daddy's favorite color and her mama's favorite number. Deep. (And do people actually have favorite numbers once their age hits double digits?)

(I personally have no particular affection for the initial, incorrectly reported variation of Ivy Blue Carter, as it sounds a bit too much like the girl whose eyes were as blue as the Bonnie Blue flag.)

Before I went to read the article, I wondered to myself where the number was in that name. Ivy? I-V? Really? They named their child after the Roman number 4?

I wonder if they'll call her Blue or Ivy. Ivy isn't terrible, when it isn't combined with Blue and doesn't have a twee origin.

  2. I much prefer Ivy Blue to Blue Ivy.  There's no such thing as "blue ivy," and the only "Blue" first name I know of is Blu Cantrell, and that didn't work out so well.

Who do we think leaked the rental fee for a floor of Lenox Hill?  (Did it deprive them of the ability to care for other new moms?)

  3. My favorite number is 14, also.

Also, I wanted to be the first person to mention Jennifer 8 Lee. Who seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth.

  4. Ivy Blue Carter scans better to my ears than Blue Ivy Carter. Plus, as I noted on Twitter, the former gives her the initial of some really good root beer.

  5. I think that their daughter should be mighty glad that she was born when Beyonce was on album #4, rather than album #9 or some such.

I like Ivy and Blue both, but not together.  "Blue Ivy" sounds like the name of a comic book character or a new horticultural breed.  In general, I am opposed to names that describe things.

She's pretty active on Twitter--posts a  lot about AA journalism events, new media, etc.  And I think she wasn't given "8" as a middle name at birth (she didn't have one), but she picked it at some point...maybe as a teen? I can't recall where I read that fact though.

As a Jennifer w/o a middle name, I have been tempted many times to just pick something b/c people can't seem to accept that I don't have one.

Isn't Blue Ivy a comic book character of some kind? If not, she should be

Yeah -- when your name is "Blue Ix," everybody thinks your dad is a huge Dune fan.

I would totally do some Face Dancing with Beyonce, if you know what I mean.

  11. I find it hard to believe you can even rent out a whole floor. I gave birth at Lenox Hill last January and I would have paid extra to have a guaranateed private room, but that was explicitly not an option (unlike when I gave birth in London several years ago). I understand their need for a degree of privacy, but if any of the reports of security, etc are correct, it seems completely ridiculous.

Totally agree.  And I feel bad for the other, inconvenienced parents.  Giving birth in a New York City hospital is bad enough without having to dodge Beyonce's security team.
