TEST HER AGE LIKE SHE'S A DOMINICAN SHORTSTOP: I haven't seen much of X-Factor this season beyond the absolutely insane Lyric 145 riff on Mary Poppins from earlier this season, but, okay, this Carly Rose Sonenclar performance of "Rolling in the Deep" from last night is just ridiculously assured for a thirteen-year-old. Yeah, 13. Born in 1999. In the UK, the show has launched One Direction, Leona Lewis, and Jedward already; Sonenclar seems destined to be its first US star.

  1. I haven't watched any of the show, but Sonenclar has a reasonable Broadway resume, including a stint as Young Cosette/Young Eponnine in Les Mis and a major featured role in the much-maligned Frank Wildhorn "Wonderland" last year.

It's also worth noting that neither One Direction nor Jedward won their seasons of X Factor.

If that show is where One Direction got their start, I don't see how you can say Sonenclar would be the first US star, unless their reception in the US has been SIGNIFICANTLY different than here in Canada.

I intended to convey "star generated from the US show," not "star in the US."

Delurking to say that I actually know Carly, having coached her in softball and basketball for 2 years. I can confirm that she is (and was, even at age 10), preternaturally poised, and a perfectionist. A great kid all around.

The Adele cover was great; here she is absolutely crushing Over The Rainbow:
