CAN DO? After much negotiating, apparently Fox has successfully locked up the rights to remake Guys and Dolls, with Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt attached to play Nathan Detroit and Sky Masterson, respectively.  (Honestly, wouldn't that be better with the casting flipped?)  I'm sure we'll have suggestions for othe parts--in particular, who plays Sarah and Adelaide?  (I can readily see Jennifer Garner or Anne Hathaway as Sarah, but Adelaide is a tougher nut to crack--maybe Megan Hilty or Sutton Foster?)

  1. Boy, would it infuriate me if there was _another_ Guys and Dolls movie with the male casting flipped. Plus they're both about 5 years too young. Can John Hamm sing - he could actually do either role.

Could Norbert Leo Butz finally get the national recognition he deserves as Nicely-Nicely Johnson?

I second Megan Hilty as Adelaide, which means it'll probably go to either Katherine McPhee or Miley Cyrus.

    1. Yes, they got it backwards.

    2. I can only hear Faith Prince in that role, so I don't know what to say.

    3. What happened to the Gyllenhall/Carrey Damn Yankees?

I could see JGL pulling off either role, but I definitely don't see Tatum as Nathan.

OMG, I just love G&D so much. I honestly can't even think straight when it comes to such things.

Hi there! This is kind of off topic but I need some advice from an established blog.
Is it very difficult to set up your own blog? I'm not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty fast. I'm thinking
about creating my own but I'm not sure where to start. Do you have any tips or suggestions? Many thanks

The Sinatra - Brando casting was the backwards one. This makes more sense: Nathan's supposed to be more of a palooka, and Sky more a graceful charmer. And Sky's the better singer - so JGL as Sky, Channing as Tatum works perfectly

Agree. And I don't think they're too young - let's remember there isn't a script, director, etc yet - this is at least a year or two down the road. I'm sure La Hathaway is already stumping to play Sarah. Love Hilty as Adelaide...I bet it goes to Scarlett Johansson though (who I wouldn't be mad at...).

I never minded the Sinatra and Brando casting; but then, that was the first thing I saw either actor in, and I grew up on that movie. To me, Brando IS Sky and Sinatra IS Nathan.

  9. Put Megan Hilty on a screen, any screen, I'll plant my ass in front of it.

Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads up.

The words in your article seem to be running off the screen in Internet explorer.

I'm not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with browser compatibility but I thought I'd post to let you know.

The style and design look great though! Hope you get the issue solved
    soon. Kudos

YES to Norbert Leo Butz as Nicely-Nicely!! That would be terrific. Now, who plays Benny Southstreet and Rusty Charlie for the trio? James Corden sings and I'd like to see someone funny . . .

But I don't see Channing as Nathan - haven't seen him in much so maybe he'll surprise me, but Nathan's got to be good or it won't work.

  13. One of the big reasons the last Broadway revival was a miss was that they cast Oliver Platt, who was a terrible singer and kind of a boring presence when he's not bloviating, as Nathan. Craig Bierko as Sky and Lauren Graham as Adelaide worked, however.

  14. A large part of it is that I just can't hear in my head Channing Tatum sing/speaking "All right already, I'm just a nogoodnik, all right already, it's true, so nu?" in any kind of credible way.

I am joining this discussion too late, but: I love Guys and Dolls more than maybe any other musical, and I adore both Craig Bierko and Lauren Graham. They were both, however, totally unimpressive in the latest revival. The whole thing was really disappointing.

I don't think Sutton should play Adelaide, much as it pains me to say so. I don't think she can play weather-beaten enough. Hilty would work better in that vein. Hathaway has to be the presumptive Sarah. Does NLB have the range for Nicely?

When they did the all-black revival with Robert Guillaume,

Whoops - it's Kim, not Mr. Cosmo...

Anyway, when they did the Guillaume revival, they changed the lyrics to "all right, already, I'm just a big zero, all right already it's true, too true..."
