GERONIMO! Matt Smith will be
leaving the role of The Doctor with this year's Doctor Who Christmas Special, though head writer Steven Moffat and Jenna-Louise Coleman's Clara will apparently be staying on. Are we equipped to speculate on who'll be replacing him? How about one of the kids from
Harry Potter? There'd been speculation for years of a female Doctor incarnation, and Emma Watson could be an interesting choice to lend star power to get over the hump of making that sort of radical change.
Donald Glover!
ReplyDeleteOff the top of my head:
ReplyDeleteTilda Swinton
Idris Elba
Catherine Tate
Neil Patrick Harris!
ReplyDeleteI'd be okay with incremental change if it meant Moffat moving on as well.
ReplyDeleteI think it would need to be a different direction, someone like Bill Nighy if they don't mind reusing an actor.
ReplyDeleteIf they were doing an American version? He'd actually be quite good. A suggestion for someone who already has Moffat experience? Jack Davenport. A very different take on the Doctor--one who's the smartest guy in the room and quite proud of it.
ReplyDeleteI've been hoping for Hugh Laurie for years.
ReplyDeleteFor "smartest man in the room", what about Jesse Eisenberg? Or Tom Wlaschiwa, the guy who played Jaqen H'Ghar in GOT? Is Simon Pegg doing anything? Kevin Rahm (Ted Chaough in Mad Men)? I'm trying to go smart, snarky, yet could pull off danger/mystery if need be. Also, what's a good jumping on point for Dr. Who?
ReplyDeleteI only started watching with Eccleston. I think you can jump in pretty readily with any of the first episodes of the new Doctors, but starting in the middle of a Doctor's run is trickier. If you wanted to do that, I'd suggest starting with Runaway Bride, skipping the rest of Season 3 except Blink (which is a standalone the Doctor is barely in, and arguably the best thing the show's done), and then watching the Season 4 Donna stuff, skipping the subsequent specials except End of Time, and then moving into the Smith era.
ReplyDeleteTamsin Grieg could be interesting.
ReplyDeleteDavid Thewlis or Janet McTeer could be very good.
If we're thinking someone who can already do Moffat how about Julia Swalaha - from my favourite childhood series Press Gang.
ReplyDeleteJust keep River Song
ReplyDeleteDamian Lewis
ReplyDeleteRichard Armitage (The Hobbit) or Chiwetel Ejiofor. Or Helen Mirren.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I love Tennant but Eccleston and Smith are still good. So sad Matt is going :( Somehow I keep wondering what a Matthew McFadyen Doctor would be like :D
