I AM FROM HOLLAND. ISN'T THAT VIERD:  Following ground we explored three years ago, Vulture attempts a taxonomy of comedic threequels.

(Minor gripe: Oceans Thirteen is better than meh.)

As long as Dame Maggie Smith breathes air, I will hold out hope for a Sister Act 3.

  2. I think Hangover III was actually interesting. It is (admittedly) laugh-light and spends far too much time with a terribly unlikable and not particularly interesting character (Chow), but it actually commits to doing something very different (and much darker) than the first two movies, and features a fascinating performance from Galifianakis. Actually, I'd be interested to see how critics and audiences responded if this was released as Hangover II. I think the reception would have been much warmer.

  3. There should be a category above "sporadically amusing" for "Muppets Take Manhattan," which is, per that list, the greatest comedy threequel ever.

I'd argue to bump "Men in Black 3" to at least meh. Far more engaging and fun than the second one, with some nice character moments.

But yeah, sticking the landing on the 3rd part of anything is tricky.

Definitely the best movie on that list, and one of my faves ever. But it probably benefits by stretching the definition of threequel. (Our extensive pondering about the reality/continuity of the Muppet universe notwithstanding).

That would be an interesting post. Most desired unlikely-to-happen threequels.

  7. Know what would be great? A "Godfather III." [No there wasn't.]
