ON THE DAY I WAS BORN/THE NURSES ALL GATHERED 'ROUND:  No, this isn't our Royal Baby post; it's a Map of the "Most Critically Acclaimed" Recording Artist From Each State.

    Poor Utah. The osmonds? Really?

  2. For Georgia I'd go with James Brown or Otis Redding. REM is an Athens band, which like most college towns is in the state but not of the state.

Prince for Minnesota because he stayed there.

Heather, can you recommend anyone else for Utah? The Osmonds were kinda huge for a long time.

  3. Slip knot? Bah humbug. Obviously Greg Brown is the most Iowan musician to ever come out of Iowa.

  4. Per Wikipedia, Jewel was born in Utah and Neon Trees are from Provo. Both have a "critically acclaimed" case better than the Osmonds.

I'm behind a work firewall, but please don't tell me Aerosmith is representing New Hampshire. I'd prefer GG Alin to Steven Tyler.

Buzzfeed, why do you hate Illinois? Or does Acclaimed Music only look at Illinois artists since 2005? Kanye West is just plain wrong.in a world with Mavis Staples, Buddy Guy (born in LA but a Chicagoan since 1957) and even Wilco.

  8. I'd bet Midler was really born in Kenya.

Some of these are unequivocally correct (NJ, Oklahoma, Mississippi) and some are unequivocally wrong. You can't think of any artists from New Orleans who may have been more critically acclaimed and/or influential than Frank Ocean? Or From Chicago?

This is more of a "I didn't know that band was from there!" list than anything else. Nice dodge, though, to get both Marvin Gaye and Johnny Cash on the list.

Georgia gets REM. Not only don't I agree that you get to exclude college towns (or God only knows what this list would look like), but all four of the band members were either born in Georgia (Stipe) or spent significant amounts of time there pre-college (the other three), with two of them growing up in Macon. Having lived in Macon, yeah, that's Georgia.

That said: this was a pretty obviously manipulated list. REM was based on where it was formed (although there is a case for the same call based on where the members were from), while the Decemberists were based on where Colin Meloy was from and went to school. Etc.

I don't even recognize the gal from Kansas. And what about Melissa Etheridge, she's from Leavenworth (complete with a cute guitar sign with that honor which I see everytime I go to see my grandma. )

Seriously I have no better ideas for Utah. I just felt sorry for them.

I don't know much, but I know I love you... and that may be, all I need to know.

Well, probably Bix Biederbecke, but this is one of those implicit genre limitation lists.

Your version has JJ Cale for Oklahoma?

This did make me pretty proud of Indiana- my home state. Even if we didn't have Michael Jackson, we could have fallen back on John Mellencamp, David Lee Roth or even Axl Rose, if desperate. Better than half of the states that had musicians I've never heard of. :)

Humph. No DC. And it's not like we don't have plenty of choices.

We have The Rule around here and we're pretty serious about it. If it even might be construed as a political commentary, it violates the Rule. If the joke only could possibly make sense as a reference to a political commentary, it violate the Rule.

I'll leave this up since it's pretty mild, of course, but it's this sort of mild thing that invites someone to bring up something else slightly less mild. And that way is madness and pretty much the rest of the internet.

I agree about the seriousness of The Rule, but I think we can tolerate this. Because it was funny.

Having been born and partially raised in Maine, I was surprised and pleased to learn Patty Griffin hails from my birth state. One Big Love has been a favorite for, what, 20ish years now.
