BLOCK OUT SOME TIME THIS WEEKEND:I don't know if I've ever been more pleasantly surprised by early reviews for a movie than I am for this weekend's The Lego Movie, currently sitting at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a fair number of those positive reviews being out and out raves.  As one of my friends observed, the film's description can sound like hanging out at one of Stefon's "New York's hottest clubs!" since it seems to have everything--a robot pilot named Metalbeard (voiced by Nick Offerman, naturally), a unicorn kitten, major members of the Justice League, a song called "Everything Is Awesome!," and Abraham Lincoln.  Who else is pumped?

Yep, this is one of those rare movies that sounds like a horrible idea but seems to have actually had some care put into it. I'm in!

Chris Rock could! (Sorry, watched the TCM Oscars documentary over the weekend and they showed the clip where Chris Rock insulted pretty much the entire voice actor industry by talking about how "easy" the job was. It infuriated me all over again.)

I'll give you that the demands are a lot less than on-screen acting. No hair and makeup alone has got to save hours a day. But "easy"? No.

I remember Tara Strong in particular being rather incensed.

  5. I give them immense credit for not going the Dreamworks route and casting BIG STAR NAMES in every part. Yes, you've got some big names in supporting roles--Ferrell, Freeman, Neeson--as well as some big names in cameo roles, but the three principal roles are filled by folks who aren't exactly big movie stars--Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, and Will Arnett. (The directors did the same with Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.)

Lord and Miller (the directors) are the real thing. (They also did 21 Jump Street, which was much better than it had any right to be.) I cannot wait to see this one.

In with both feet. I don't think I'll have to persuade the kids to join me.

Very excited for this. I think this the first time I will have seen a movie on opening weekend since LotR Return of the King.
