WHEN BUTTERFLY ROCKED HIS LIGHT BLUE SUEDE PUMAS: Indeed, if you want a fascinating pop music time capsule, Rembert Browne's compilation of Tufts University Spring Fling concert acts from 1985-2004 pretty much tells the story of what high-five figures in student activities fees could bring to your school every year.

(The comparable Amherst list, as best I can remember it: we had John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band in 1990, Living Colour in 1992 during the Time's Up tour, then Spin Doctors in 1993, and both TMBG and 10,000 Maniacs at some point in 1993-94. And then there's the UMass Spring Fling concert of 1992 -- in order: Rippopatamus, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, fIREHOSE, Fishbone, Phish, and The Beastie Boys )

As an occasional member of the concert board during my education at Tufts (class of'00), I don't even remember all of those acts performing. But, wow, so late 90's. The Roots, LL Cool J, and Barenaked Ladies were probably the highlights of those shows. We also had smaller concerts that slo included some other very timely acts-- I know we had on campus appearances by Fishbone, De La Soul, Rahzel, Cracker, Fastball, 2 Skinnee J's, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and Tufts' own Guster during my time. I'm probably missing a number of others…
