BOO:  Tell us how Halloween is going for you. Favorite candies? How many Elsas are in your neighborhood?  And do you like scary movies?

50 comments:

  1. ONLY at Halloween do I like Smarties and those weird peanut butter candies in the orange or black wrappers.

I'll do an Elsa count tonight - last year, my neighbor Diane, who lives 2 streets away from me, had 40 trick or treaters and we had 1. I must live on the scary cul-de-sac without realizing it. However, in the last year, some kids have moved in down the street so I expect to at least see them.

Halloween potluck at work today but no costume for me (I am wearing an orange shirt and black jacket.) Favorite candies are Twix and Kit Kat. And two nights ago I went to Rise of the Jack-o-lanterns which is an amazing display of very artistic and fun carved pumpkins in all kinds of designs - pics of a few on my instagram @maretorliss.

  3. Hey, do you want to see something really scary? http://youtu.be/lYGkKU7Ruko

  4. You DO have two black cats. Might be scaring them away.

  5. Booker T is most likely in the sewer for the night. And Otis is inside the house so they don't know until the knock... And then he's greeting everybody because he's the most sociable cat ever.

This is more creepy than scary, but: the Westmoreland County (PA) Coroner is auctioning off a bunch of guns used in suicides.

First Halloween in 13 years with no responsibility for taking our kids out -- the 13 y.o. (homemade TARDIS costume) is going out with her friends in Narberth and sleeping over, and the 10 y.o. (11th Doctor costume - that is, fez & bowtie) is going out with friends closer by. So we'll be home handing out candy and can give you some rough numbers and favorite costumes at night's end.

"In the sewer for the night"....not a euphemism?

14th Halloween in our apartment and we have never had a single trick-or-treater. So we go over to a friend's courtyard building and participate there. No, I do not like scary movies. Not one bit.

Also: I want my kids to bring me Reese's cups so I can freeze-and-devour.

  12. Alas, no. There's a storm drain across the street from my house and he disappears into it frequently.

Our 10 y.o. has a nut allergy, so by operation of law I get all her Reese's varieties. An undisputed win-win.

I finished sewing an Umbreon Pokémon costume last night. The older child is going as Sweden, a character in the Hetalia anime. She ordered it from Etsy with babysitting money.

I love Milky Ways and Twixes, but I am hoping for many Reese's so I can make this:

More importantly, we are hosting a sleepover with nine girls tonight. I have decided to introduce them to the original "A Nightmare On Elm Street."

Underestimated Halloween candy: Midnight Dark Milky Ways.

While there are approximately 287 candies I do like, what Halloween triggers for me are the candies I don't like. Well, it is not the candy I hate, but the noise that my kids (who are dressing as George Washington and Napoleon) make when they eat the candy. Specifically: Starburst, Laffy Taffy, tootsie rolls and Nerds. I am shuddering at my desk just thinking about it. Oh, and lollipops too (aaargh the sound when the lollipop clinks against their teeth).

  17. Also--"Elsas" or "Elsae?" Discuss.

I'm wearing orange tights with a black dress in the office today. Plan for the evening includes sitting at Tria on 12th and Spruce to watch the gay boys head out to the Harry David Halloween ball. Nobody does Halloween like gay boys.

When my sister and I were kids, we watched Stephen King's It like it was the feel-good movie of our childhood. I know most of it by heart!

We went trick or treating at a mall last night with our 3 year old daughter. She absolutely flipped out by how many Elsas there were. "There's Elsa, and there's Elsa, and there's another Elsa, but *I'm NOT* Elsa! Waaaaaa" By the end of the night, she had two new friends: "Elsa" and "Other Elsa".

Wow. You're brave. You may wind up with nine girls in your bed, afraid to ever sleep again. Freddy is terrifying.

  21. I always watch the Buffy Halloween episode. Not the meh haunted house one, but the season two entry entitled "Halloween" where everyone turns into their costumes and Giles explains that vampires just relax on October 31st. It's a treasure.

And also "Cabin in the Woods," because while I don't like watching horror movies I like the idea of horror movies.

  22. The Pathetic Earthling2:27 PM

Mrs Earthling suggested an one-drink-per-Elsa drinking game, which seemed ill-advised.

I'm a great fan of Reese's, Snickers, and Butterfingers. I mostly don't like concentrated sugar tablet stuff (Sweet Tarts, Spree, Bottle Caps), but at Halloween I make an exception.

The Little Earthling is going out as "Charlie Brown-as-a-Ghost" (lots of felt circles for "holes"), the Wee Earthling as a "Mostly-Pink" Cowgirl.

I enjoy all sorts of chocolate candy, of course. I also am pro candy corn, which I've learned can be controversial. Otherwise, Halloween isn't much my thing -- I hate scary movies, being scared, haunted houses, etc. Also, I've never had a trick or treater in my apt building, which saves me from having candy sit around where I can eat it. Get back to me when Thanksgiving arrives. I LOVE Thanksgiving!

  24. I don't understand the love for Elsa over Anna. Yeah, Elsa gets the better dress and the blonde braid, so maybe that's it. But Anna has most of the adventure in the movie - falling in love (with the wrong guy), going after her sister, climbing a mountain, meeting the rock people, saving her sister. Maybe she can't freeze things at will, but she seems way cooler to me.

I am, at odd moments, pro-Circus Peanuts, which is also a very lonely position.

This is me at work today. http://wattsay.tumblr.com/post/101437685348/liblinks-action-librarian-amy-watts

The librarian who does most of the tweeting for our Libraries account often refers to individual librarians who do something as "Action Librarian." Like, "Action Librarian Amy Watts to be on 20/20 with her cats." or whatever. So that gave me the idea, sometime after midnight last night, I must admit. I'm not sure how exactly I would improve it given more time, but I can definitely say I'd look for a way to have fewer hosiery bits tucked in uncomfortable places.

My favorite candies are the ones that I'd never buy full-size, like 100 Grand or Whatchamacallit. They're just so very Halloween-y, to me.

Our building won't get any trick-or-treaters. We're on a street where we're the only building, so the houses (large, old, kinda fancy) see all the action. So no Elsa count from me, though I am up to three between my Facebook friends so far.

I like certain scary movies. Ones with a non-supernatural protagonist. There's always a chance I could get in a good kick on Hannibal Lecter and get away, but Freddy, or the legless ghosts of Japanese cinema, etc? Nothing doing, not for me.

That's why I like the peanut butter chews. I never got them except at Halloween.

  29. Everyone here is complaining about the snow, the cold and the waves on Lake Shore Drive. I made the smart choice of door answerer, instead of trick-or-treater. My house is always mobbed with kids because my neighbor across the street does a horror display every year. This year, it features a guy hanging from a noose, and he's been hanging there for a few weeks. Nice thing to see every day.

We decorated, and I'm particularly fond of the carnivorous skelemingos (skeleton flamingos with bones strewn beneath them). I love seeing the kids coming over in costume. Happy to give candy to teens if they're in costume.

The teen went as Where's Waldo at school, along with a bunch of other Waldos. He's at a friend's tonight but he's the only Waldo and said he may improvise something else.

Sadly, I can't eat any of my favorite candies - had to cut out chocolate because of migraines (Hershey special dark was my fave, and midnight Milky Ways) and chewy ones like Dots and Twizzlers have pulled out my crowns before. If the kiddo brings home Sweet Tarts I will take some. Meanwhile I stocked up with some Salted Caramel ice cream and Graeter's butterscotch sauce to treat myself later.

Going to hang out with my cousins and their cute kiddos tonight to see their costumes and little kid excitement.

Got home kinda late and just got my first batch of trick or treaters. One and only one Elsa out of about a dozen toddlers. I saw a couple TMNTs, an awesome girl Batman, a great Jessie from Toy Story, and a buncha princesses. Me, I'm watching Buffy and drinking a nice Chianti. Then at 8, switching over to Night of the Living Dead on TCM.

  39. D'Arcy7:49 PM

Only one Elsa so far after almost two hours of trick or treaters. My 12 yo is a zombie baseball player (she and all her friends are assorted zombies), the 10 yo is a devil and the 8 yo is the dog from The Corpse Bride (her friend who is with her is The Corpse Bride) I always steal the Twix from the kids to dip in my tea, but this year hubby had to run out before the festivities started and he brought me back my first Pumpkin Spice Frappucino. It's lovely.

Zero Elsas! And my favorite scary movie is (the original) American Werewolf in London.

One hundred percent agree! My cousins 3 year old john and I were strongly disagreed with by a bunch of 4 year old girls when we expressed this opinion this summer. We also believe Hans is not a nice man. That was a minority opinion too. (Although santino Fontana, who voices him, is a delight and a childhood friend and had a great Disneyland photo on his personal facebook with him and Elsa and Anna cast members on his lap and he in street clothes).

Zero elsa's! A single Rapunzel. No other princesses. But not a lot of kids because the Chicago weather sucks tonight. We did get the teenager upstairs and her boyfriend dressed as starbucks coffee and drinking a starbucks coffee.

We contributed an Elsa, for a total of 3 in my neighborhood. I should have taken a pic, as they were a group of multicultural Elsas, which I thought was cool.

I like Take 5s and Nerds--both candies I just think are overkill in their regular size but perfect in fun-size.

No scary movies for me, but weirdly I will read Wikipedia summaries of them.

I saw a surprising number of Annas in the group pictures my friends-with-kids posted. I think Anna's costume would be more fun to wear...the white streak, the whole boots/vest/full skirt/cloak thing. If I'd thought about it sooner, I might have done it myself. (Annoyingly, I recently threw away a pretty pale blue button-front shirt that I'd had for YEARS and never wore--an Anna costume would be the ONLY real use for it).

But I absolutely get the wanting to inhabit the character of Elsa, if we're looking at dressing up from that POV. It's the breaking free from the shackles of your repressed life thing. Which, granted, Anna does in her own way, but...without the badass unclip-the-cape-and-let-it-fly-away moment. Also, probably, for the kids, the magic.
