IT'S EITHER THAT OR WE TALK ABOUT THE GENOCIDES IN WHICH WE ARE COMPLICIT:  It's Columbus Day: tell us about something you've discovered recently, even if someone else actually found it first.

[I've finally started watching Gilmore Girls with Lucy.  Fun stuff.  Yes, that's right: I've never seen it before.]

I finally discovered that everyone is right about The Middleman, so there's that.

  2. This isn't quite a discovery, but I finally picked up Jess Walter's "The Financial Lives of the Poets," a 2009 novel that I had (based on reviews) recommended to a friend but never read myself. It is just wonderful -- a poignant but hilarious dissection of American life post-crash. Highly recommended. I'm hoping to finish it today.

1Q84. It's been on my list for awhile but I finally started it about a month ago. I've only been reading a chapter or two a day so I may be reading it for the rest of my life.

Battlestar Galactica. Discovered, tore through, finished.

I am about to start discovering Breaking Bad.

Sooooooooo good. After reading The Bone Clocks over the weekend I might want to go back to that to see how it's really done.

Peaky Blinders - BBC series on Netflix Streaming. Cillian Murphy as a WWI soldier turned family crime boss. Sam Neill as the guy trying to bring him down. SO. GOOD.

  7. I just started "Alias" and "Archer." "Alias" is fun, but I'm getting distracted by all the outdated tech. And as a huge "Bob's Burgers" fan, I find it distracting on "Archer" that Bob Belcher is a yelly, international spy.

Friday Night LIghts. Just a few episodes into Season 1 and totally hooked. Love me some Matt Saracen. (Yes, I realize I'm about 8 years late . . . )

The w is re-starting Gilmore Girls. Or possibly just starting it, the show was basically done before we ever met.
For my part, I've convinced her that our recent move puts us just far enough from Baltimore that we can start watching The Wire. We're two episodes in. I met someone once that said it was good, so we'll probably stick with it.

I just read Silence by Shusaku Endo. Holy crap. Fabulous.

  11. I finished last night. My one complaint is that it had no three-dimensional female characters. Otherwise, if you don't mind a novel that revolves around men, it's a great book.

I finally got into Spring Awakening, and now I get why Lea Michele was the big name when Glee started, and why everyone was so gaga over Jonathan Groff. And watching clips of the Broadway show and Tony performances on YouTube led me to a lot of "oh hey, it's __________" since the other male leads when on to Newsroom and Pitch Perfect.

You remember the FNL rule, right? You need to watch season 2 for the continuity, but you don't let it prevent you from continuing, and as soon as you finish the series, you forget it ever existed. Capiche?

  14. And my recent discovery - a year after everyone else was reading it - was Walter's "Beautiful Ruins," which I loved.

  15. I just finished "Beautiful Ruins" last night for my book club. I've been trying to get it on the docket for a year. I really liked it and will be interested in hearing what the rest of the group thinks on Sunday. I enjoy timeline jumping, multiple viewpoint books, but I know they're not everyone's cup of tea.

I've been catching up on all the X-Men movies I never saw....so, all the X-Men movies, other than the first one. Liked X2, but The Last Stand didn't do much for me. Next up: First Class (I'm skipping Origins: Wolverine).

  17. I also recently got into Spring Awakening, and am happy there's so much video on the internet to feed this new obsession (I guess bootlegs don't get taken down after the show is over?) I also saw the Deaf West production the other day, which was really amazing. About half of the actors are Deaf and half are hearing, and I think incorporating issues of deafness and communication actually makes it a more interesting show. It's sold out through the end of its run, but hopefully it'll go somewhere else afterwards.

Pennsylvania. Luckily, the natives seem inclined to sell anything for shiny trinkets.

OMG, my (then 10 year old, now 12 year old) daughter and I watched the entire series together. It's great. While Gilmore Girls is fabulous, things got iffy for me watching with her right around the time Rory loses her virginity... Still, we both loved it.

Should I stop just before that episode?
