NO LONGER AMERICA'S WORST FANS:  Query for my fellow locals -- has there ever been a visiting athlete as beloved in Philadelphia as Pat Burrell?  It is impossible to overstate just how loud of an ovation he's going to receive when his name is first announced on Saturday.

  2. Simon Gagne might be close; if he's not as widely loved as Burrell, it's certainly with a similar vigor. I'll be there Thursday for his return and anticipate a long standing ovation.

  3. FWIW, I'd say Randall Cunningham (followed by Reggie White) was the most beloved ex-Eagle, and Charles Barkley for the 76ers.

Burrell will also be roundly booed if he scores a run.

Mark Grace got a lot of love when he came back to Wrigley as a Diamondback.

I'd reverse that order for ex-Eagles. And Dawk also may rate higher than Randall.

How was Brind'Amour received when he came back? I always loved the guy when he was with the Flyers.

this, of course, is funny given how little love he felt when he was with the team.

  9. I forgot about Dawk's return last season.  Agreed.  Yes, it was recent, but it was unambiguous.

  10. I disagree.  I think fans were patient with him during his slumps far more than they were with anyone else I can think of.

Burrell's sometimes lengthy slumps were annoying, but he really only had one season (2003) that you'd objectively call horrendous.  The rest were actually pret-tay, pret-tay good.  So the fans' patience with him in terms of his on-the-field effort was actually fairly well merited, even if expectations were a good bit higher than actual results.
