IT STARTED WITH MOHAMED BOUAZIZI:  Time Magazine has named The Protester as its Person of the Year, besting Admiral William McRaven, who commanded the assault on Bin Laden's compound; Chinese dissident Ai Weiwei; Rep. Paul Ryan; and, um, Kate Middleton?

    Pippa > Kate.

I hate these general topic cop-outs.  How about Sarkozy.  The Libya thing, at the center of the Euro crisis,  Carla Burni photos have journalistic justification.  Boom.

Please let's nobody make the tired joke about "they overlooked me."  Thanks, folks!

Speaking of tired jokes, they overlooked NPH and Anne Hathaway.

  4. On the one hand, it's lame to choose a non-person.  On the other, I really think it would have been hard to choose a single person this year.  Steve Jobs?  Apple didn't do very much game-changing in 2011.  Paul Ryan?  Please.  Grover Norquist?  Seal Team 6?  Someone else?  I just don't see a single person with outsize influence over 2011.  (Like Benner, I was thinking much about Sarkozy, though I might have paired with Merkel.  Pairs are less of a cop-out than generic types, in my opinion.)
