POTENTIALLY RECONCILABLE: Recognizing that All Things Taylor Swift is usually Matt's department, but, seriously,
what's up with the Furry Band in the "Never Ever" video? Has an unnecessary line been crossed between adorable and too-self-consciously-twee-and-quirky?
I thought the lyrics video for the song might have already crossed the line.

Oh, dear lord. I did not know. It's only missing Comic Sans.
ReplyDeleteAnd as a side effect, you'll also have the song stuck in your head ALL DAY.
ReplyDeleteYes. Allow me to make a Zooey Deschanel comparison; where for Ms. Deschanel it comes across as "Perhaps calculated, but she's always been that way so it's kind of cool," for Ms. Swift it coems across as "oy, way to jump on THAT bandwagon." That said, the guys playing the furries look like they're having just a ton'o'fun.
ReplyDeleteJust saw a performance of and read an article about the song "Ronan" that Taylor Swift wrote about a little boy who died of cancer. I can't pick on her today. Even though she deserves it for "Never Ever." (And I say this as someone who actually likes Taylor Swift. But "Never Ever" is just... ugh. I hope the entire album isn't like that.)
ReplyDeleteI guess it sort of fits with the pajamas thing? They're a stuffed animal band? Single and loving it, but also cute and non-threatening in the way early '90s Liz Phair wouldn't be? I can see this song gaining purchase as a semi-feminist tween empowerment anthem, and what more can one ask from Taylor Swift?
ReplyDeleteI recently realized that I am an 11 year old girl when it comes to my musical tastes. Not going to lie -- I love this song and turn up the volume when it comes on in the car. Add to this, Carly Rae Jepsen and the new Bieber songs, and I'm a happy girl.
ReplyDeleteDid we note the Jimmy Fallon and the Roots cover of Call Me Maybe done on a Playskool xylophone and other preschool instruments?

Also, what's up with the wool cable-knit wallpaper in that apartment?
ReplyDeleteReally terrible music; no reason for it to exist
