MY JOB AS SAM MALONE WAS TO LET THE AUDIENCE IN, TO LOVE MY BAR FULL OF PEOPLE:  Awesome GQ oral history of Cheers, on the thirtieth anniversary of its debut.  Find out which three actresses Kirstie Alley beat out for her role, a different kind of Wade Boggs story, and all kinds of smart stuff on what made the show work.

  1. I have this bookmarked to read later - thanks. Cheers is absolutely my favorite sitcom of all time. And it holds up incredibly well. "It's a dog eat dog world and I'm wearing Milkbone underwear" is my favorite Norm line ever.

  2. I think we've talked about the Ratzenberger audition story here before, but it never gets old. "Bomb audition/interview, then just make up your own role/job" is pretty much the best.

I "Pocketed" it earlier. I love Pocket. (Used to be called Read It Later)

  4. I was having some fun after reading this looking at the Must See TV broadcast history. (Honestly, have the fun is looking at the revolving door history of the slot between Friends & Seinfeld. Boston Commons, anyone? Union Square?) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Must_See_TV#NBC_Thursday-night_lineup_history

It really is a great product. I always have a great article with me now, even when I'm not connected. Longreads should sponsor the, Or vice versa.

I have to look this up - I just send myself email links of what I want to read later, which is pretty kludgy.

Interesting to see NBC trying to fill the post-Cosby gap in 92/93
