PARDON OUR DUST: In connection with a comments upgrade currently in process, things may look a little strange around here today. Don't worry--everything will be back to normal (or at least as normal as we get around here) shortly.
Basically, here's what happened -- Haloscan is forcing us to upgrade to Echo for comments, but to do that, I have to change the blog's template from Blogger Classic (i.e., raw HTML) to its new Layouts format. (New 3-4 years ago, but we didn't change then.)
Jury is still out. Two clicks to comment or read comments, as Matt notes, is not good. Missing the lo-fi Blogger Classic look, but I suspect that won't be a dealbreaker. Haven't tried search yet -- once the old comments are migrated over, will they be searchable as well?
I'll note from a mobile perspsective that my iPhone permits me to see and read the first three or so comments, but not to post comments. It should resolve readily. Fortunately, we know setting it up on Halo so it works the way we want it to is possible (Atrios has done so), so it will come.
I don't mind the in-page popup, but hopefully you can fix the double-click issue while still preserving the comment count on the home page (which Atrios doesn't seem to have with this new-fangled Haloscan thingamajig.)
Are those "Mad Men" avatars? And I never learned how one goes about creating an avatar - once one does so (somewhere or other), do you add it here via "add images" or in some other way?
Do you guys know that comments are now showing up from a few days ago that were invisible before? Yesterday, the "best 30 mins of comedy" post had 6 comments, this morning it has 15, and most of the "new" ones are from before the 6.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="color: #808080;">I dislike change of any kind, but so far the new format doesn't look too bad, despite the two-click comments. Just wanted to say thanks to all of you for putting in the behind-the-scenes technology gobbledygook work to keep the blog going. </span></span>
Be patient. This will not last.
ReplyDeleteHoly Toledo!! Me no likey!
ReplyDelete(I know, it won't last....)

ReplyDeleteWell, seems like the new comments are working now.
ReplyDelete(cough) Have you checked for lead?
ReplyDeleteDo these little pictures mean people are gonna get avatars like @ Deadspin?
This is supposed to be a popup window. Grr.
ReplyDeleteI don't know that I miss the popup window so much -- this is nice.
ReplyDeleteThings we still need to fix:
ReplyDelete1. Pop-up comments.
2. Size of text in sidebar
3. Importing of 110K+ existing comments.
But will they thread?
ReplyDeleteI actually like this sort of window.
ReplyDeleteI like this sort of window (provided it works from my mobile device), but wish we didn't have the double click-through to get there.
ReplyDeleteThe search is also quite nice.

ReplyDeleteI do not believe comments will be searchable, but the new search is otherwise neat. The double-click is annoying as hell and we will make it stop.

ReplyDeleteI think the silhouette is Shaggy from Scooby Doo.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the comments pop-up is pretty much useless on the iPod Touch as well.
ReplyDeleteWell, let's see how this works.
ReplyDeleteOn my iPhone, I couldn't post and I couldn't read more than the first three comments. Nice look, though.

ReplyDeleteProgress is scary.
ReplyDeleteOK, I'm on board.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how I feel about not being able to see that front page from the comments, but I'm sure I'll get used to it!
ReplyDeleteWe fear change.
ReplyDeleteCan we get the comments to be numbered?
ReplyDeleteHm. I'm a little confused about actually getting to the comments, but having arrived here, they don't look bad.
ReplyDeleteDon't like the two clicks to comment, but mostly I'm commenting just to try giving myself an avatar. Haven't figured it out yet.
ReplyDeleteJinkies! It IS Shaggy!
ReplyDeleteAsking: have we lost the ability to preview before posting? Or am I just missing something?
ReplyDeleteAre those "Mad Men" avatars?
ReplyDeleteAnd I never learned how one goes about creating an avatar - once one does so (somewhere or other), do you add it here via "add images" or in some other way?
Yes, this is a Mad Men-Yourself Avatar, and I did it through linking my Twitter Avatar to my comments here.
ReplyDeleteI rather like the new layout. Comments look pretty good on my blackberry thus far.
ReplyDeleteMatt, can you be a little more specific about how to link your twitter avatar here?
ReplyDeleteIf you click on the "from" and choose "My Twitter Account" from the drop-down menu, it should be self-explanatory. It's fairly user-friendly.
ReplyDeleteHm, that worked.

Yes, we are aware. Things are working as they should (though we're still trying to fix the two clicks to comments issue).
ReplyDeleteOK - I'm not complaining, just wanted to make sure y'all were aware. Looking forward to the two click to comment thing being changed - it's annoying.
