IN ALL OTHER WEEKS, WE DO NOT MENTION JUSTIN BIEBER EVEN ONCE; WHY, IN THIS WEEK, DO I LINK TO PAGES INVOLVING HIM TWICE? In a feature we haven't looked at in four years, The Boston Phoenix again ranks the 100 un-sexiest men of the year. Find out who they think looks like a cross between Stevie Wonder and Mel Brooks, who's "a caramelized monument to syrupy-sweet pseudo-romantic dross," and which singer was described as sounding "like someone has kidnapped Death Cab’s Ben Gibbard, cut off his testicles, and is holding him for ransom in a church basement decorated with rainbows and unicorn."

Call me old-fashioned, but if there's one place where one should be expected to make judgments about people based on the very superficial attribute of appearance, it's on a list ranking people by how sexy they are.  I agree that the Pope is not sexy.  I do not have to stake out any political or religious position to disagree with the argument that what makes him unsexy is the Vatican's response to sex scandals in Germany.  Does it make me superficial to think that what makes him unsexy is that he (a) is a gross and wrinkly old man; and (b) he probably has never had sex and certainly never will in the future?  I would say that if somebody said to me, "hey, Isaac, would you like to have sex with the Pope?  Please consider the pros and cons," those two things would come to mind a lot sooner than "Vatican response to sex scandal."

I hear what you're saying but turning a blind eye to pedophilia really hurts your sex appeal.  Not quite as much as engaging in pedophilia, of course, but close.

  3. I'm going to suggest that we focus on the other 99 named; issues regarding the moral (or legal) culpability of the Catholic Church for the abuse of children are slightly beyond this blog's scope.

Oh, isaac. Just when I am sitting here, floundering on how to properly word my response to the post, I read your comment and realize that it's ok. You've got this one. Thanks.

To be honest, the whole thing was surprisingly biased compared to what I usually see posted here.

  6. I saw political stuff going in both directions -- Ensign and Sanford, but Paterson and Edwards too.  Figured it'd cancel out.

Fair enough, I can see that Rahm Emmanuel also cancels out Scott Brown. Plus, it's the Phoenix.

Meh, the Boston Phoenix doesn't like old men. Big deal.

While I'm sitting here listening to the multi-talented, and decidely unsexy Har Mar Superstar, YOU can listen to him read a poem by unsexy actor Michael Madsen: Balls.

I'm not certain how being involved in a sex scandal is evidence of *un*sexiness.  Who we gonna believe, Boston Phoenix, or Rielle Hunter, Mark Sanford's Argentinian Soulmate, Veronica Perroncel, or the *n* quantity of women who went "night putting" with Tiger?
