NOBODY GOES THERE ANYMORE. IT'S TOO CROWDED: Commenter Meghan alerts us to the publication of the newest edition of Restaurants & Institutions Magazine's list of the Top 100 Grossing Independent Restaurants in America, which we managed to discuss last year as well. While fifty of the top 100 are in NYC or Las Vegas, it's impressive to see Philadelphia's Parc debut at #66, one of three local Stephen Starr locations on the list.

In terms of total meals served, DC's Old Ebbitt Grill believes it has topped the titans of Frankenmuth. It also happens to be the only restaurant I know of that prints the scientific nomenclature of its oysters on the menu.

I was kind of bummed I hadn't eaten at any of these but it isn't worth the trip to Frankenmuth.

If you like German food and Christmas decorations, Frankenmuth is definitely worth the trip.

I'm confused, wasn't Tavern on the Green the one that just closed? Or am I getting my NY restaurants confused?

  5. Tavern on the Green is currently closed for a much-needed refitting/rehab, but will reopen at some point, apaprently under the same name.

I remain amazed that Milleridge Inn gets on this list each year. Sue and I grew up almost literally spitting distance from there and I never thought it did particularly good business. Lots of parties thrown there, but does that count on this list?

Do you think that the people at Zehnder's tell the people at the Bavarian Inn their food is too damn expensive, and that's why Zehnder's served 150,000 more meals?  Yeah, probably not.

  8. Marsha-according to my mother, the Milleridge Inn is all the rage. They do all levels of parties plus dinner. I haven't been back there since the prom.

No. 63 (Mike's American), No. 78 (Jackson's), and No. 93 (Coastal Flats) are all owned by Great American Restaurants, a chain based in Northern Virginia. They own a few more spots around the region. If you're ever down here, I highly recommend them for great food and excellent service at a reasonable price.
