588-2300-RIP: Knowing we have quite a few Chicagoans as well as ex-pats around these parts, I wanted to note the passing of Elmer Lynn Hauldren, a.k.a., the guy from the Empire Carpet commercials. Hauldren was 89...years old not $/sq. ft.

    Man, that's the passing of one of the TV titans of my childhood.  It's him and Son of Svengoolie, and the day Rich Koz stops playing Svengoolie will be an awful day indeed.

  2. Those commercials must be national these days, as I've had 800-588-2300 stuck in my head at least since I moved to the D.C. area 7 years ago, and possibly even before then.  It's almost on par with 1-800-54-GIANT from Red Sox radio broadcasts.  (For non-New Englanders, who you gonna call when your windshield's busted?  Giant Glass.)

    I only knew the cartoon alter ego. Had no idea it was based on a real guy!

    I assumed maybe the jingles were well known because of WGN, but according to Wiki, Empire is now, well, an empire..."Empire Today's advertising is prevalent in areas serviced by the company, especially throughout Atlanta; Baltimore; Boston; Chicago; Charlotte; Cleveland; Dallas-Fort Worth; Denver; Detroit; Eugene, OR; Flint; Dover; Flint; Grand Rapids, MI; Greensboro; Harrisburg; Hartford; Houston; Indianapolis; Lansing; Los Angeles; Manchester, NH; Miami; Milwaukee; Minneapolis-St.Paul; Nashville; southern New England; New York City; Norfolk, VA/Hampton Roads Metro Area; Orlando; Philadelphia; Phoenix; Pittsburgh; Portland, OR; Naples, FL - Ft. Myers; Raleigh-Durham; Richmond; Sacramento; San Diego; San Francisco; Scranton;

  9. Nooooo! Before they went semi-national, that jingle was a way for expat Chicagoans to bond.

    We get the commercials on Canadian satellite (WGN and the like).  Oh, NOW I have it stuck in my head, too.  800-588-2300 em-PIRE!
