MEET THE NEW BOSS, SAME AS THE OLD BOSS: Allegedly, no decision has yet been made, but apparently, the producers behind The Office have picked their horse for the new boss. There may be issues with the performer's availability, and wouldn't shock me if NBC is pushing back (the performer is decidedly not a big name, at least in the US), but if this is the choice, it certainly takes the show in an interesting direction (in particular, I'd argue, for Dwight).

Catherine Tate has been my pick since I heard she was appearing in the finale: she's an able comedienne, not a "too big" name who would overshadow the cast, and if the new boss came out of the guests on the finale, she's the most likely with Will Arnett's pilot picked up.

I don't have a clip handy, but her pantomime scene in her Doctor Who episode "Partners In Crime" was screamingly funny. She was terrific as the Doctor's companion Donna Noble.

I've been expecting this since she was announced. She's the only guest star for the finale who would make sense, and she's not a big enough name in the US for it to make sense for her to have been invited otherwise.

This would get me watching again, I'd think.  (And she was my favorite companion, sorry Martha.)

  6. Even though a Martha episode would be my pick for best episode they've done since I started watching, Martha was my least favorite companion.  Donna was great not just because she was the first long-term companion of the new series that had no romantic attachment to the Doctor, but because she had a genuinely affecting arc and ending to her story that wasn't just happy wish fulfullment.

Yes, yes, yes!!  The writing for the Donna arc was brilliant and surprising, and Tate played it so beautifully.  I think her mix of great comedic talent, very strong personality, and ability to act poignantly and subtly (as well as over-the-top funny) is a perfect match for The Office. (Matt, is your Martha episode pick Human Nature?)

  8. I like Martha a lot (why did she have to marry Mickey, why???) (and I LIKE Mickey!), but Donna is AWESOME. "It's me, Donna!" "Yes, I can see that."

  9. My pick is "Blink," which is barely a Martha episode (or even a Doctor episode), but to the extent it features any companion, it's Martha.

Though Sally Sparrow would make a great companion if Carey Mulligan hadn't gone and got famous.
