WHAT'S ALOTT5MA WATCHING? Well, pretty much every new show has now aired at least a couple of episodes (save for a few shows that have yet to debut), so it's an opportune time to talk about what you're TiVoing and what you're TiNoing. For me, 2 Broke Girls, Hart of Dixie, Suburgatory, Up All Night, and New Girl have gotten Season Passed in principle, while Pan Am, Prime Suspect, and Gifted Man remain possibles (haven't watched a second episode of any of them yet), with most others having gotten TiNo'ed or not even sampled.

  1. I haven't picked up anything new.  I hope to use the time created by that vacuum to go back and watch Deadwood, Mad Men, and the full-series DVD set of The Prisoner.  And read and sleep more.

I've jumped on Up All Night, Suburbgatory, The New Girl, and Pan Am, plus I'm sure Homeland will be added to that list once I get around to watching it. I wasn't planning on adding that many shows to my cultural curriculum, as I'm already trying to find ways of cutting back, but I just can't help myself.

I've added Up All Night, and I wish I had Showtime b/c I really want to watch Homeland.

  4. Really, really love Pan Am, even though ep 2 was a small step down from ep 1. New Girl is just silly fun. A Gifted Man got off to a really good start, but it's on the bubble for me, staying in for the cast as much as anything now.

I like Up All Night for its personnel but hope to see some growth -- same for New Girl.  Loving Pan Am.

    Russ: Classic Prisoner or new?

  7. Suburgatory and Homeland definitely; New Girl and Up All Night probably; Revenge maybe.  (Half hour shows get more leeway, as they're easier to watch when I get home late.)  No on 2 Broke Girls unless it becomes something other than "Kat Dennings is snarky and rude for twenty minutes and apologizes for being mean for two minutes." I've seen a few more pilots, but nothing moved me and/or the new shows lost in the DVR timeslot battles.

I'm actually most excited to have finally gotten back into Fringe, which I credit to Seth Gabel being promoted to series regular.

  8. Classic.  Amazon had it cheap.  I've seen most (probably not all) of them, but it's been a long time.

  9. And if I still find myself with too much spare time, I can catch up on Parks & Rec, The Shield, True Blood, Dexter, Rescue Me...  I am really loving how the new era completely changes tv for me.  I can wait until next year to see what worked and what didn't, and catch up on DVD/Netflix/whatever.  I only miss a season's worth of water-cooler discussion on the particular show, and I don't get sucked into anything that flops.  :)

  10. I enjoyed the first episode of Ringer, but then missed the second and the third is still on my DVR. So that doesn't look like I'm going to stick with it.  I plan to try "Homeland," but didn't catch the premiere last night. I'm finding it hard to find the time for new shows. Instead, I'm watching my old favorites and am almost entirely caught up on Breaking Bad.

  11. I thought I'd like Up All Night, but don't.  Pan Am might make it into the rotation but I'm not buying the spy plot.  2 Broke Girls is ok but I don't get how it can sustain.

I'm really enjoying Happy Endings...which is kind of new this season.

    Please end Whitney already.

  12. I like the Up All Night cast (well, the leads; I can take or leave Rudolph), but I just didn't think the premiere was funny.  Has it gotten funnier?  Also, I was annoyed by Rudolph's character.

I actually liked Whitney more than many seemed to have, notwithstanding the live audience.

The first three episodes of Modern Family have been dreadful.  Haven't picked up anything new, although Mrs Earthling likes Prime Suspect.

As I have a bizarre mental block against 30 min shows, I've already deleted Suburgatory, and never even gave the others a try. I've also taken Modern Family off the list, and will probably cut Happy Endings soon, too. They were fine for the summer. I'd have to check my TiVo to be sure, but I think A Gifted Man is still on the list, though sitting on the bubble. That second ep did NOT work for me at all. I am beginning to understand why he divorced Elizabeth Bennett. Secret Circle and Revenge have been pleasant additions, while Pan Am and Prime Suspect hang in there, though they have to continue to prove themselves. I'm looking forward to Homeland, however I manage to see it.

This is hard to do when you're not sitting in front of your TV.

I never watched Breaking Bad.  Now I am watching it and almost nothing else.  Finished season 1 this weekend.

  16. They've found a better way of integrating the domestic life with Rudolph's character, though they still need to improve on that front.

    I'm watching and definitely keeping:
    Up All Night
    The New Girl
    Suburgatory
    Homeland

I have on the Tivo and haven't watched or made a decision on:
    Pan Am
    A Gifted Man

    I watched and TiNo'd:
    X Factor
    Terra Nova
    2 Broke Girls
    Ringer
    Person of Interest

And then I have all of my other shows. So my Tivo is insanely full still.

I'm giving Avatar Park another episode or two, since I like the concept and production values.  But yeah, other than the NBC comedy trio (one of which I watch more out of habit than enjoyment), I think everything I watch is on HBO or BBCA.

Unlike most of y'all, I'm giving Whitney a little bit longer to win me over.  I'm really liking New Girl, Up All Night, and Free Agents.  Torn on 2 Broke Girls.  I've recorded the new Survivor but haven't watched any of it.  No new hour-long shows for me, but I'm not usually into those anyways.

  20. I'm giving "Avatar Park" (that's great, Jordan) another episode or two.  I think I'm going to be in on "Suburgatory" for the long haul because that cast is great.  There's a chance "Hart of Dixie" or "Revenge" sticks and takes the place of "Gossip Girl" in the trashy hour drama category, but unlikely.  I'll add "Up All Night" and just catch up if it continues to be good.  I watched the second "New Girl" and just don't get it.  I was just actively annoyed the entire time.

No one is watching "Whitney"?  Bueller?...

I have given season passes to:

    Up All Night
    Suburgatory
    New Girl
    Prime Suspect
    Homeland
    Revenge (it's good soapy fun)

I haven't watched Person of Interest yet, and am waiting to see another episode of Pan Am before I make a call on that one.  I have watched and given the NO to:

    Two Broke Girls
    Whitney
    Ringer
    Free Agents
    Terra Nova
    The Playboy Club

I'm still looking forward to checking out Grimm and American Horror Story -- I think they just pushed back the premiere of Grimm, no?  Not sure why.  But American Horror Story has Connie Britton, Jessica Lange and Denis O'Hare -- what's not to love?

Is there where I whine about how behind I am on my DVR-watching and how I have no idea how I'll catch up??? I'm afraid once I have some time to sit down and watch I'll bomb through everything so quickly that none of it will sink in.

I WAS totally charmed by Suburgatory. I checked it out mainly because so many critics I like said "I know it sounds bad but it actually looks pretty good" but I really didn't know that in addition to Jeremy Sisto it also had Alan Tudyk and Cheryl Hines and that girl from Weeds and it just seemed like every scene had some new cast member that I liked. And the fact that it reminds me of both Mean Girls and Daria pushes happy buttons for me, too. Not above admitting I want more of what I already know I like. See also the Joyful Noise trailer re my Sister Act 2 obsession.

Hampered by an older single-tuner DVR and no HBO/Showtime, but let's see....

Tried Ringer, dropped it after episode 3 (for me, Buffy Summers gets a 3-episode benefit of the doubt).  Tried the Whitney pilot, was not moved enough to continue.  Tried the 2 Broke Girls pilot, will consider watching more bc of Kat D., but the comments above aren't suggestive that much has changed.  Liked the Prime Suspect pilot, have Ep. 2 sitting on the TiVo waiting for a night the Phillies aren't playing (perhaps tonight).  Going to watch the Terra Nova pilot on Hulu.  Missed the Suburgatory pilot - may try to catch it via On Demand (if it's even there), or maybe just skip it and check out Ep. 2.  Sticking with New Girl for the moment (Ep. 2 to be Hulu'ed).  Up All Night (pilot pretty good) will also be Hulu'ed.  Also tried the Charlie's Angels pilot.  Good enough production values and I thought the cast did fine, but I think that ship has maybe sailed for my demographic -- grew up with original series; liked the first Barrymore movie OK; but at this point, I think maybe I've just seen it done enough times. (Sorry, bella.)

I have watched all of the Ringer and it is not good.  Its been broken up with.  Necessitated by Prohibition.

First off, a general thank you to the ALOTT5MA population for being lovely and supportive re: Charlie's.  The post-pilot episodes get much better so feel free to tune in if you haven't yet or if you watched the pilot and thought "eh," but I also totally understand if you, like Adam C, are just kind of over the idea.  Nothing I can do about that. :) In a world where most of the internet acts as if you killed their puppy if they don't 100% LURVE your show, it's nice to have a place where the emphasis is on bolstering things we enjoy rather than tearing down things we don't.  So - thanks for being awesome.

As far as other new shows, the standout for me thus far has been Revenge.  It is certainly "good soapy fun," as Aimee said, and I'm really liking Emily Van Camp in the lead despite not really being a big fan of hers previously.  Eager to see how subsequent episodes play out.

And obviously loving the new season of Survivor!

I kind of liked Hart of Dixie, and was entertained by the Cravath name check.  As a current New Yorker, the "move out of Manhattan and discover true happiness" trope resonates for me.

  28. The second episode of Charlie's was much better than the first, in large part because they were able to write more to the cast's strengths--most notably, Minka Kelly is hot and plausible as an Angel, but the extensive "bad ass street racer" background just doesn't match up with her on-screen persona.  And Isaiah Mustafa is pretty much always welcome.

And while I found Van Camp whiny through most of her stint on Brothers and Sisters, I thought she was great on Everwood, though weakened during the "dark Amy" arc, which means her playing this role is a bit of a surprise.

I thought the most recent ep was pretty good--there is a hilarious shot of Christina Applegate circa her Kelly Bundy days. I'm ok with the two separate worlds and they've set up more MR/CA history, which I liked.

And Matt's and bella's comments make it more likely I'll do the occassional drop-in on Charlie's, even if it's not a regular part of my rotation.

  31. Me too!  I was forcing myself to watch a few sitcoms and finally decided last season to accept the fact that I would really rather spend my time on hour dramas.  I thought that meant I had no sense of humor and that made me sad but I really am a much happier tv viewer.

After tonight will have 3 New Girls on the DVR eating up space. Tried 2 Broke Girls, gave up. Up All Night is good, not great, and will stay, as is Free Agents. Suburgatory pilot was fun, will keep going for a while there. Was going to try Whitney, but heard enough bad to just delete site unseen. Thouight first Person of Interest was dubious, second is sitting. Really, really wish I wasn't too cheap to spring for SHowtime and HBO, because Homeland looks great and I am an unabashed huge fan of the Patink. DVR management gets trickier with two; the wife likes some stuff I don't (Criminal Minds) or don't mind but could easily drop (Mentalist, House).

  33. I like The Good Wife and I'd like to watch Pan Am.  I really, really hate football.

The only new show that I've granted a season pass is Homeland, though I haven't even watched the first episode yet. I've liked what I've seen of Suburbgatory and Up All Night, so will probably check in on them in the future. I hated New Girl, though not so much for the Zoe elements, but that everyone on that show just seemed implausibly non-human.

  36. By the way, in the "better WAY late than never" category (or "it's new to you"), I am checking out The Amazing Race for the very first time. Largely due to the big fan base for it over here.  Liking it so far, but not necessarily hooked.

  37. Totally agree, mcm.  I now have to DVR "CSI" every Sunday night to make sure I get the ending of "The Good Wife," which looks like it will always be delayed due to football.

I think last night was enough for me on 2 Broke Girls as well.  Just not seeing progress in the characterizations.  It's too bad, because I think there's a good show there somewhere - just not as currently written.  It would be nice, for example, if even just one of the supporting characters at the diner weren't a lazily crafted stereotype.

    Season Passes:

    Up All Night
    2 Broke Girls

Probably going to get a Season Pass but have only seen the Pilot:

    Pan Am

    TiNo'd after watching:

    Ringer
    Secret Circle

    TiNo'd without watching:

    Playboy Club
    Person of Interest

I didn't find all that much to be interested in this year. In a stronger year, I probably wouldn't even be bothering with the two comedies, but I like the casts enough to give them some rope. My dance card is pretty full as it is - Monday night is a train wreck.

Thanks, Matt and Adam - Isaiah is indeed fantastic (and will be back for more, if we get to keep running), and the cast has really gotten into a nice rhythm.  Hoping we get a little more time to prove that - I'm sure the Playboy staff is sitting around today saying the same thing.
