SAFDIE DANCE: Having spent some time yesterday at
1515 Arch Street, I'm glad to know that there is indeed
a colorfully named Tumblr dedicated to Brutalist architecture. Its
2012 Top Ten posts is a nice survey of the style's highlights, but really, nothing beats
Habitat 67.
I had no idea there were so many places to film Parkour videos.
ReplyDeleteI admire the designs that are more cleanly geometric, but those that appear dedicated to recapitulating the excesses of cubist painting in three dimensions have little appeal.
ReplyDeleteI can sort of get Brutalism, but what it reminds me of are hideous ugly East German housing blocks, and that's not really what you want to be going for.
ReplyDeleteIf you've ever visited the Taos Pueblo, the adobe structures of which date from the 11th century, you'll know how much Safdie's Habitat is influenced by those structures which to my eye look organic rather than Brutalist.
ReplyDeleteP.S.: TPE: I love you.
