I WISH: We have an
Into The Woods trailer, and they're clearly going "dark and semi-realistic" (somewhat surprisingly so, for what is hoped to be a big family blockbuster, though quite similar to
Maleficent) and hiding exactly what Johnny Depp will look like as the Wolf. (Billing order, for those who care? Streep, Blunt, Corden, Kendrick, Pine, "and" Depp.) Not much singing in the trailer, either. Begin judgment now.
I think for a first trailer it's decent. I personally would have loved more singing, but as an introduction and teaser for the many people not as obsessed with this particular musical as I am, I think it would prove intriguing.
ReplyDeleteI just don't know who this trailer is for. If you know the musical, you're wondering where the hell the songs are and if you don't know the musical, you're wondering what the hell this is.
ReplyDeleteIt's for the people who watch Grimm and Once Upon a Time.
ReplyDeleteWhich makes it not being ready for/attached to Maleficent even more inexplicable.
ReplyDeleteFair point. September 8th is the premiere for Once Upon a Time and I assume this'll be attached to it. (Grimm isn't until the end of October.)
ReplyDeleteThe witches entrance seems awfully dark and sinister. Especially when you consider that she's going to be singing the lyrics routing through my rutabaga, rating my arugula, ripping up my Rampion, my champion in just a few minutes after this scene starts.
ReplyDeletePlease forgive the spelling errors, as I use the speak to text option.
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't shock me if that winds up getting cut or restructured. The Witch's Rap is a very difficult piece of singing, requiring GREAT diction, and Streep isn't exactly a powerful singer.
ReplyDeleteLack of singing aside, I love the "I wish" structure and think the new Tunick orchestrations (assuming that's what we are hearing) sound gorgeous. And I am on board with the overall look and feel - fairy tale but not cartoony.
ReplyDeleteThat would be almost as awful as the previously rumored cuts. At least I'll have the Netflix version.
ReplyDeleteBased on her singing in "Postcards from the Edge," I think Streep is up to the task of playing the witch.
