THEY'RE RUNNING OUT OF JOURNEY SONGS: We're a little more than two weeks away from the return of
Glee, and
the song list for episode one has leaked--we'd already seen clips of "Empire State of Mind" (a full group number), so that's no surprise, and the selection from
A Chorus Line will shock exactly no one, but it's a nice mix of songs (2 theatre songs, 3 recent hits, and an 80s power ballad). Take your guess for how these fit into the plot and who's singing them.
Seven songs? Bread can be overbuttered, you know.
ReplyDeleteRolling Stone only lists 6, but Wiki mentions a 7th song. FWIW, the finale had seven songs (though one of those was only a very short clip), but I agree they have to be careful not to overkill--one of the things that I felt made the second half of last season weaker is that they tried to shoehorn songs in without really seeing if and how they were relevant. (Though we still got great moments like Chris Colfer's "Rose's Turn.")
ReplyDeleteI count 7 in the RS story -- Empire State of Mind, Telephone, Billionaire, Every Rose Has its Thorn, What I Did for Love, Getting to Know You, Listen.
ReplyDeleteAs usual, you're right--I misread.
ReplyDeleteI'm so confused. The article says that they placed at Regionals and now will travel to NYC for Nationals. But wasn't the whole point of the finale that they did not place at Regionals and thus were threatened with disbanding? Didn't they come in third of three at Regionals? I guess internal consistency has never been Glee's strength...
ReplyDeleteCould we be getting another mash-up ala the Madonna ep?
ReplyDeleteMaybe RS got the plot details wrong?
ReplyDeleteOr maybe, we just have to Suspend Our Disbelief.
Based on what they've said thus far, this is a new school year, and it's announced that Nationals are in NYC, and they must place at Regionals to do so. Also, Wiki gives us a few "who's singing what," which suggests that a couple of the songs are likely only going to be snippets (a la "I Kissed A Girl," "Mr. Celophane" in the pilot).
ReplyDeleteI could totally see Mercedes doing "Listen," and I can see it working into a plot for her.
ReplyDelete"What I Did For Love" could be a group number, but otherwise I'm betting it's for Rachel, perhaps working into her post-Jesse plot line.
It was, at best, confusingly worded.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Something Happened to the second place team (what were they, Aural/Oral Intensity?) and Nude Erections was allowed to go to Nationals after all.
ReplyDeleteI am, however, confused as to how that works come the FALL, when presumably a good chunk of kids from the "winning" year should have graduated/gone on to college or fast food already.
I have to assume that Regionals were held in the early spring, and Nationals took place in late spring with VA and AI participating. Now it's a new year, and the whole process will start again.
ReplyDeleteBlech. I hate hate hate that Empire State of Mind song. Hate. Hate.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it will sound awesome when Matthew Morrison is rapping it while wearing a sweater vest.
ReplyDeleteOh, you are EVIL.
ReplyDeleteAww, no "Dance Ten, Looks Three"?
