"LEADER OF THE SAINTS, INSPIRATION TO HIS CITY":  The editors of Sports Illustrated have named Drew Brees as their 57th annual Sportsman of the Year.

Other SI writers penned essays on their nominees, including Chris Nowinski, Roy Halladay, Rafael Nadal, Ndamukong Suh, Armando Galarraga, Mike Krzyzewski and the San Francisco Giants.

  2. I don't think one can argue against Brees; it's only a question of preferring someone else like Halladay or Nadal based on narrative.  But Brees is clearly a worthy winner in a year where there's no clear-cut Michael Phelps.

Wesley Sneijder -- all World Cup XI, third highest scorer (and highest scoring midfielder), and for his club, led Inter Milan to the Treble, including man of the match in the final of the European Cup.
