HIS ACTING? GENIUS! No matter how much you already like Jon Lovitz, you can't help but think even more of his mensch-itude following this AV Club Random Roles interview. No, he doesn't get into the night he beat Andy Dick to a pulp (indeed, NewsRadio is the one show he won't discuss), but, gosh has he worked with a lot of interesting people and has generous things to say about them. Except Andy Dick.

  1. I think it's also that Lovitz knows his audience--the AV Club loves them some NewsRadio, and Lovitz's addition is widely regarded as the death of the "good years" of that show. Lovitz was placed in an impossible situation, having to follow Phil Hartman, particularly given the circumstances of Hartman's demise, but it woulda gotten ugly.

Not sure I see that, Matt. His discussions of his other work don't shy away from uncomfortable truths, so I don't get the sense he'd shy away from substantive criticism of that role or that season. My sense was that it was just too emotionally painful for him to discuss, given his long and deep friendship with Hartman. The Andy Dick stuff - all the more reason to leave it alone.

  3. I've never really liked Jon Lovitz as an actor. But I like him a lot more as a person after reading this.

The link to the Kris Kristofferson "random roles" is worth it -- he cannot (CANNOT) remember anyone's name.

AVC: Martin Scorsese?

KK: Oh yeah, Martin. He was great. I was really honored to be doing a film with him.
