MOVIES THAT GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME: Looking to escape a going-nowhere relationship this Valentine's Day weekend? Try watching one of the films from Moviefone's list of the 25 Worst Romantic Comedies Ever. I luckily have escaped fairly unscathed, having only actually seen one film on the list, the awful Because I Said So, though I once did see that horrendous Madonna movie where she played a yoga instructor in the theater (and it was so painful I don't even want to IMDB it).

Friday bonus lists: Slash's 10 favorite guitar riffs and the 10 funniest characters on TV right now.

28 comments:

  1. 3, including (somewhat inexplicably) the WORLD PREMIERE of "Down To You," which was at a skanky multiplex at 19th and Broadway.

I have seen Arthur 2: On the Rocks, and parts of Two of a Kind. Thankfully, that's it. Surprising, as I have seen an awful lot of romcoms.

Oh my God 11!!  That is horrifying.  I actually kind of liked Because I Said So (I saw it with girlfriends, I think there may have been hive mind going on, we also had like a pitcher or two of margaritas first, possibly each).

  4. A friend of mine in high school was obsessed with Olivia Newton-John.  She must have made me watch Two of a Kind at least ten times.  I've also sat through I Love Trouble. I've done my time.

Should be on this list: Must Love Dogs. I love Diane Lane, I love John Cusack, and this was awful. I believe one part of the movie had Diane answering her own father's personal ad.  Eww.

Only "I Love Trouble." That list needs more "Made of Honor."  I'm fairly certain I have a tort claim against Northwest Airlines for showing that garbage in a confined space.

  6. I have only seen one, but I will defend it. Haunted Honeymoon was hysterical when I saw it at age ten. Gene Wilder and Dom Deluise! How can that be bad?

I am ashamed to say I've seen 7 of them. I can blame most of them on my jobs at Erol's and Blockbuster during high school and college, but nothing excuses "From Justin to Kelly".

    0 for 25!

And the funniest characters list needs more Ron F'n Swanson.

I actually loved I Love Trouble when I watched it as a kid.

The others that I've seen (#1, #4, #5, #9, #13, #15, and #23) definitely belong on the list. Down to You may be one of the worst movies I've ever seen in a theatre (prob tied with the terrible Gwynnie Paltrow as a stewardess movie).

Please don't tell me I've seen more of these than anyone else. That would be humiliating.

I've seen only Simply Irresistible (which is kind of OK, not top 25 bad).  Also, anything with Fredie Prinze should almost automatically be on the list.

  11. Wow, I'm a girl and I've only seen 1!

I've seen parts of Simply Irresistible, which I don't think was quite that bad, but wasn't particularly good.  And I might have seen the Mannequin sequel a long time ago, but I don't recall.

Never saw the movie, but I think Who's That Girl might be the most underrated Madonna song out there.

Oh my God I am even more embarassed to have seen 11, somehow this post has become my own personal humiliation.

I've only seen Arthur 2: Love on the Rocks, which I remember hating even though I liked Arthur.  But I was pretty young at the time -  I haven't seen any of these since I reached the age of reason.

Don't feel bad, Heather, we're tied at 11.

I've only seen 2: Good Luck Chuck and From Justin to Kelly, but in my defense, From Justin to Kelly was watched as part of a MST3K-style party.  I was surprised to have only seen 2, as a lover of romantic comedies.  Apparently I have better taste in romantic comedies than I realized.

Definitely seen Haunted Honeymoon, and it's possible that I've seen Alex & Emma - Luke Wilson + Kate Hudson sounds familiar, though nothing about the plot does. I have assiduously avoided all the other movies on the list, despite my decade-ago crushes on both SMG and Julia Stiles.
As I implied in a previous thread, Abed Nadir is too low on that list. Also alluding to the previous thread: Tom Haverford is between #2 and #4 on his own show, behind Ron F'in Swanson, and possibly Leslie and Andy (personally, I say Yep to Knope, but I see Andy as basically Michael Scott placed in a different situation).

I saw Blind Date in the theater.

3 for me, too. Rumor Has It, I Love Trouble, and part of Mr. Wrong. Part of it is due to the fact that I will watch Jennifer Aniston in just about anything (I just like her. I don't know why.) I can't explain the other two, as I can't stand Nick Nolte or Bill Pullman.

I think I've only seen two of these.  I feel better about myself now.

Also, threadjacking because I want it in writing that this was my guess before it happened - I'm calling Betty Fox, mother of Terry Fox, to ilght the Olympic flame tonight.

I believe that, unless I blocked out the experience, I have seen precisely zero of these films.  Apparently, while I've seen plenty of rom coms, including plenty of bad rom coms, I've missed all of these.

I'm going with dual lighting by Sale and Pelletier.  Especially important to get that out there, as I'll be hitting the opening ceremonies late, due to dinner plans.

  22. I'm sticking with Rick Hansen.

I believe I've seen 14 of them (though I frankly can't remember for sure if I saw Alex and Emma). I actually enjoyed I Love Trouble and Because I Said So, but I understand that puts me in the minority. The others that I saw richly deserved their spots on the list.

10 here, and less than half because I used to review movies for my old job. I saw some really crappy movies as a kid, obviously.

  25. Zero!  For the first time in my life I am proud of something.

Oh, Callie, I've seen all of them (professionally) and still retain most of my brain cells. I have a soft spot for "Because I Said So," a movie that is fine when you watch t with your oppositional teenage daughter and it makes both of you laugh.

"Summer Catch" isn't a romantic-comedy because it isn't a comedy, at least not intentionally. [Well, it also isn't romantic, but who's quibbling?] If you're making fun of Freddie Prinze Jr., "Head Over Heels" is a much worse movie.

The Penelope Cruz vehicle "Woman on Top" is worse than at least 20 of these movies and if you'd told anybody at the time that not only would she still be working a decade later, but that she'd have three Academy Award nominations and one Oscar, nobody would have believed you...

It's still better than "Chasing Papi."
