MEXICAN MAFIA TEQUILA VS. POORLY DRAWN AUTEUR GORILLA CARTOON: I've said a lot about how crappy Entourage has been and can be, and I'll defend it. In fairness, though, I should mention that this season has done an uncommonly (for it) good job digging its two protagonists a hole deep enough to make me want to watch how they crawl out. That the show has done this with the quality of actors it employs -- aside from Scott Caan and the intermittently used Rhys Coiro, the wooden and dazed-looking porn star Sasha Grey is the least ineffectual of this season's principal cast -- is impressive.

Granted, I have no faith in the show's ability to resolve these problems satisfactorily, and I seriously doubt they'd do what the show really needs (make Vince an irreversible failure, to see the other side of the unwarranted success he had; it would be particularly satisfying to have set this season up so that either Vince's or Ari's success would be inextricably tied to the failure of the other, but obviously that is a very different show than the one I've been watching). It does feel like this season is playing with higher stakes that were harder earned.

The C- and D-plots are still pissing me off.

  1. Given that there's only one episode left this season, I'm going to be extraordinarily pissed when they pull the typical "and somehow it all works out for Vinny Chase!" ending in the final episode.  I don't have a whole lot of optimism that what's going to happen is that Vinny crashes and burns and starts seriously thiinking about accepting a role opposite Sasha in the movie he's tried to get her to turn down, which would be a far more interesting plot.

Credit where credit's due--I do think that the Drama plotline has been decent, even though I could have lived all my days without ever having to deal with Billy Walsh ever again.

  2. Like most folks, I watch this show for Ari Gold.  Vinnie?  They never sold me on him being a star.

That said, Vinnie and the gang have been boring for several seasons now.  Seeing silly parties with half-naked girls had me yawning half-way through the first season.

Still, I am curious where they are going with 1 episode left of this season and a 6 episode final season next year.  Seems like a lot to wrap up in a scant 7 episodes.  Cocaine is hard core and it would be sad if they did not do it justice.

Like I said, no confidence in the wrap-up, but I'm a guy who actually watched every episode of The Nine just because of that great first 20 minutes.

Incidentally, Ari/Piven (sweaty, bags under his eyes, jittery) looks a whole lot further down his coke spiral than does Vinny, even though they are doing a nice job giving Adrian Grenier a bluish tint.

Must I always be the ever vigilant Beavis?  Silly parties with half-naked girls are never boring and/or sleep inducing.  Never.
