CAN KING GEORGE DANCE THE BLACK SWAN IN A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM WHILE MAKING THOUSANDS OF FRIENDS, HIGH ON CRYSTAL METH AND ONE-HANDED? AMC Theaters are again running
a two-day Best Picture Showcase splitting the ten films between on February 19 and 26, and selected cities also have the option of the single-day, twenty-three hour marathon of all ten film in a row starting with
Toy Story 3 at 10am and culminating with
The King's Speech beginning at 7:05 the following morning. (Particularly cruel, or appropriate:
Inception at 2am.)
I am doing the 24 hour marathon again this year. Did it last year and stayed awake through all but about thirty minutes of district 9.
ReplyDeleteI am impressed. I was just thinking that we are lucky this year in that several BP nominees are short -- no three-hour epics in the bunch.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of the continued lengthening of films in general. There should always be long epic films, but not all films need to be two and a half hours long. I was glad to see that some of the best documentary feature nominees that I've started watching are in the hour and a half or so range, including Exit Through the Gift Shop, Restrepo and GasLand.
ReplyDeleteI do think Social Network could have been a bit longer. The final act (from Eduardo's "I'm coming back for the whole company!" speech forward) is a bit rushed, and all too much is told, not shown, in the final scene between the Rashida Jones/Eisenberg "whatever happened to..." conversations and the on-screen captions. It was also pretty blatant that there had been some cuts there to get the PG-13 (particularly in the party scene). Heck, there's a lot more story to tell afterwards--the second chapter of the Winklevii issue which is still ongoing, Facebook's defiance to stay independent and private for as long as it has rather than being sold out to Google, and Parker being forced out.
ReplyDeleteLast year it started at midnight with Avatar, and I am a little bit worried that this will be harder due to ending it up with the all nighter. Also I was hoping the three I had seen already would be better positioned for napping, but they are first (Toy Story 3) and early on but also one I want to rewatch for my feelings regarding the performances (The Kids Are All Right), and second to last (The Social Network) and the only one I have already seen twice and will readily watch again.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm going to do the first weekend - Toy Story 3 and The Fighter are the only nominees I haven't seen. Although 127 Hours is the one I have the least interest in watching again - not because I disliked it, but it feels more like an exercise in creative filmmaking than an actual story. It'll be a last minute decision.
ReplyDeleteNormally I would use this as cause to brag about living in a constantly "selected" city, but look! Robin! This is happening at Loews on the Waterfront!
ReplyDeleteThat, I envy, because you can get drunk at Loews on the Waterfront.
I'm considering the first weekend, since it has all three films I haven't seen, plus the two I'd most want to see again (except for Inception, and I already have that on DVD).

My friend Megan and I are doing the 19th for the same reason -- we loved Toy Story 3, and feel no need to rewatch Inception, The Social Network, or Black Swan just yet.
ReplyDeleteThat would help, particularly with 127 Hours.

ReplyDeleteThis might be the year I finally see them all; unfortunately, it's my wife's birthday party on the 19th, so I'm pretty much locked into doing the 10 film marathon. Thankfully, I've seen TS3 so can show up later, and I've seen Winter's Bone so there's a nice late dinner break for me in the middle.

ReplyDeleteWe are recreating our own best picture marathon, as we did last year (as long as the weather complies, as my college bestie has to travel from Albany), only it will be the weekend before. I think 127 Hours is the only one I haven't seen that I never really had an interest in seeing. However, since we can't go more than like 48 hours without major snowfall, the weather postponements might go until May, possibly June.
ReplyDeleteOn the bright side, we are in the house now (including furniture yay!) and so movie watching will be much better.

Have now seen Inception, so I just have to catch Winter's Bone and 127 Hours. Not sure I'll get to 127 Hours.
