More interesting than that is the timeline that this presents for Ferris. It's said in the movie that the reservation he stole was for noon, but we can't say with certainty if that's what time they ate. Seeing as how they finished the lunch with no hassles, it's safe to assume either Abe never showed up or he showed up well after their lunch was finished. Either way, with a start time of 1:25pm that afternoon, there is plenty of time for Ferris and company to make it to Wrigley in time for the game.
The eleven-inning game took 3:09 to complete, which means that the foul ball Ferris catches had to have been sometime after 4:00pm. That leaves, at the most, one hour and forty-five minutes for their trips to the museum, Sears Tower, the lake, and Sloane's house, while squeezing in two musical numbers during the parade before racing home at 5:55pm. Seems a bit tough to squeeze all of that in for most normal people. But, seeing as Ferris has the magical ability to sound exactly like both a young Wayne Newton and a young John Lennon, I'm willing to believe he could make the schedule work.

HEY, BATTER BATTER BATTER, SUH-WING BATTER: An intrepid writer for Baseball Prospectus out together all the available visual and sonic evidence to determine exactly what Chicago Cubs game Ferris Bueller attended while truant, including who hit the foul ball in his direction (which he caught almost four months later, actually), adding:

Even better, what school is still in session in June? Were there a lot of snow days in Shermer that year?
ReplyDeleteI always thought primary and secondary schools ran into June. My primary schools outside Philly ran until June, and my high school in Florida (no snow days) ran through the second week of June every year.
ReplyDeleteI'm beginning to think that Ferris Bueller's Day Off is this blog's Tyler Durden.
ReplyDelete1) Schools around here are in session until late June, so that's definitely feasible.
ReplyDelete2) I was actually watching FB'sDO yesterday, and it occurred to me that Ferris' door bell recording could totally have been done by Kevin McCallister. Which got me to thinking that wouldn't it make perfect sense for Kevin McCallister to grow up to be Ferris Bueller? I mean, aside from the fact that Kevin has a bajillion brothers and sisters, and Ferris only has Jeannie.... but I guess that by the time Kevin would be a senior in high school, all of the others would be out of the house, since he was the youngest. And he and his mom also have an amazing relationship, just like Ferris and his parents. It totally fits.
3) Just because they show things happening in a certain order, doesn't mean they necessarily occur in that order. They didn't necessarily go to the entire baseball game, they could easily have grabbed tickets day-of and walked in whenever, and left as soon as he caught the ball.
Especially in recent years, as states have added school days to the calendar, schools either start in mid-August or run well into June. In Texas, my district opted for the early start, but other schools have gone in a different direction.
ReplyDeleteI'm a jerk about suspension of disbelief, for almost everything, with two notable exceptions: The ending of V: The Final Battle, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
ReplyDeleteLet me ask a different question: what class would only be getting to the Hawley-Smoot Tariff by June -- a very behind-the-schedule American History course?
ReplyDeleteI withdraw my objection, seeing as New Trier and Glenbrook North (both comporable schools from the north shore of Chicagoland) all go through the beginning of June (though I'll note that they are both having final exams that week).
ReplyDeleteThe Star Baby saves the day? Really?
